There are some who know about pigeon behaviour and habits and those who do not. Muncher is one of the former. Yesterday when we spoke to arrange a day out today he told me that there would be no decoying but simply standing in a ditch shooting birds as they flighted. Sceptical never, dubious probably.

When I arrived at the designated place it was so 'back of beyond' that none of the assembled knew which county we were in. Anyway after a long drive I found the place and met Muncher who told me that the flight had been going for some time. There was only one hide and I was shown to it only to find that it was already occupied by someone who refused to remove his face mask. However Motty's physique gave him away. Muncher's brother completed the quartet of shooters.

To set the scene the flight of pigeons was two fields wide. One field was maize and the other rape, in front and behind. The plan was to shoot birds over the maize to make picking them easier. The pigeons were flighting in droves but only 15-20% came up the maize field and the rest over the rape meaning that they were out of reach. I have never ever seen more pigeons on a flight line than I saw today. First thoughts were that they were going into a rape field far beyond our positions but when the return line started and we shot a few we saw that many were full of wheat.

For several hours the traffic was all one way giving us all great opportunities at high and rangey birds. I hardly saw a bird shot decoying to dead birds on the ground. Late in the afternoon the return line started but it was blown slightly off course by a reasonably strong wind. We did though all shoot some very high and fast birds on this return line.

I saw some very exceptional shooting today. My own contribution to the bag was minimal. There were 251 on the clicker but the man in charge of the clicker (Motty) was not always paying attention and I am convinced that we shot at least twenty more than that.

In all of my years decoying and shooting pigeons generally I have never seen anything like this.

It was a very enjoyable day. You pulled off some fine shots, despite the gun clearly not fitting you. It was an exceptional flight.

We stayed for at least another hour picking up after you left. The four dogs worked really well, and only a minimal amount of the pigeons were lost.

Great stuff you guy's, what a treat, to have such a busy line of pigeons coupled with todays wind.

Nice write up JDog, hope the language wasn't too bad :)

Any video footage?

To be perfectly honest I never heard a swear word from any of them. I on the other hand swore like a trooper. Much as I am beginning to quite like the semi auto it just doesn't fit at the moment and I missed far more than I usually do. A trip to a gunsmith on Tuesday is on the cards.

I kind of wished I had done some recording, but some of the shooting would not have been caught by a gopro. Anyway, nobody needs to hear JDog's relentless cursing!
