billytheghillie
Shortly I will be getting a new trailer (IW) can anyone recommend a good hitch lock, and a wheel clamp? Thanks

Gordon R
Avoid any hitch with a circular key - can be opened with a biro.
subsonicnat
The only way is to tKe the wheels off,,,I kid you not.. They will probably bring the wheels next time though. Tok one by me with a Ton of Horse Manure on,took ten minutes to drag it across very boggy ground and cut the fence out,10 mins from start to finish.. michufc
Unfortunately if they want it bad enough they will get it the best thing to do is just try to make it as awkward as possible so they have more chance of being caught by you as the police will just give you a crime number and send you on your way

daveboy
I've seen trailers and caravans being taken on cctv and the men in the white transits just hooked a chain round the towing hitch and drove off with it.. I would use a big padlock and chain to a ground anchor and make it hard to get too with a still saw. Remove the wheels and fit a tracker if possible. kyska
We had two nicked two nights ago, properly locked with chain to the wall, wheel clamps etc, properly scoped out, came through an unalarmed gate.

Unfortunately they use cordless grinders these days, quicker and quieter and smaller than stihl saws, I agree removing the wheels is probably the best bet and just make it generally hard for them to get to it or keep it hidden and out of sight if you can, but If they want it they will have it. Ouch did they cut the chains/Clamps off?
kyska
Ouch did they cut the chains/Clamps off? Chains were cut, anti shear, expensive, trailers were gone, no sign of the clamps. Obviously stolen to order, two really nice flat beds, but left stock trailers, a sheep handling system and other stuff they could of lifted onto the trailers. I'm not sure what I'd do if the alarm did sound, I'd walk over and get crippled by a couple of thieving violent itinerants. I'm no shrinking violet, I'm not a big chap but I can handle myself, not against 3 blokes at night who have nothing to lose though.
kyska
Edit-I'll get a pic of the cut chains, they've been crimp cut, like a hydraulic pair of bolt croppers. Not cut with a saw

Get the biggest torch you have and just keep scanning the area in the hope they scarper empty handed. 2 drag two trailers away they must have been a few of them with vehicles. snow white
Most trailers you can take the wheel hub of i now its just like taking the wheel of but putting hub on then wheel takes more time and thats the last thing they dont have they want to be in and out in as short of time as possable. Tam
Tie an alarm mine to it (or 3) You will know when it moves & be able to follow the brown trail - much cheapness :good:

bornfree
An alarm mine ties with clear strong nylon will make a noise & leave a brown trail These work very well. The one thing thieves hate is loud noise.

Dougy
Also, buyer beware of stolen trailers. Stolen trailers involved in an accident will void any insurance.
B25Modelman
Mine has a Bulldog lock, one wheel chained through its spokes to the side cage and is blocked in by a car...and I still worry. I also have loads of photographs of specific anomalies i.e. welded joints, marks, weld splatter, should I see one local. OK they can remove things and paint but these sort of things are normally left untouched. Edited December 31, 2016 by B25Modelman
