Scully
Son passed his driving test on Thursday; one company won't even entertain insurance, another wanted £12.000. 😀 How he said it without laughing I'll never know.

Scully
Geez! Put him down as a named driver?Didn't seem to make much difference, but I'd like him to start his own policy. Rethink needed on my part I think!
walshie
It's a joke. It would be better if they just said they didn't want to insure him. When my son passed his test at 17, even putting him in our insurance as a named driver was £4k or more. He didn't even drive for the first year after passing because of this. Vince Green
Geez! Put him down as a named driver? That just raises you policy to the same amount, they sussed that one ages ago Its becoming normal now to offer 'blocking' premiums because they simply don't want young drivers. leadbreakfast
Sometimes it pays for young drivers to buy a new car and find one that includes insurance. The 300 a month doesn't sound to bad then.

four-wheel-drive
Well looking on the bright side at least you will not need to worry about him spending his money on drink and drugs even petrol/diesel as it will all be going on car insurance

CaptainBeaky
Try putting the policy in his name and putting yourself as a named driver. That got my son's insurance down from 4k to £500 ish (he's 19 and a learner, on a 13 year old Honda Jazz) Without a black box Edited May 26, 2017 by CaptainBeaky

DannyS
Yup, his own insurance with you and the wife as named drivers. That's what I did with mine when I passed a few years ago got it for about £2500 in the end i think. Still ridiculous as i paid about the same for the car and it was only a 1.0L polo. Scully
The quote was for him as fully comp and the owner main driver with both his Mam and me as named drivers as I wanted him to build his own no claims. Coop and some of the black box insurers seem the way to go. Many thanks all; much appreciated.
Danger-Mouse
Just out of curiosity, why are you getting fully comp quotes on a car worth less than £500? My last couple of cars have been of similar cost and I went for TPF&T, made insurance much cheaper. Tbh the car I have now is only insured fully comp because it was cheaper than the TPF&T quotes I received elsewhere. He'll still get his NCB and it should be at least a little cheaper. ferguson_tom
Just out of curiosity, why are you getting fully comp quotes on a car worth less than £500? When i was a kid fully comp was cheaper than TPFT, my mum worked in insurance and reckoned it was because being a young driver if you went full comp you were more likely to look after your car as statistically fully comp drivers were less likely to crash than TPFT.
