Dougy
I decided to cut down a climbing rose, it was getting a bit out of hand and the window cleaner was looking like a rag doll from the thick thorns. The main trunk if you like is quite thick, now the question is, do I burn it or would it make a good walking stick for when out beating.? owdnorthener
I would make a stick out of it. Why waste it ? Good luck. Alan.
old'un
Burn it, I would imagine its as bendy as a plumbers drain rod and not very straight (pictures) go cut yourself some Hazel wood.
Lord Geordie
I used a rose shaft for a stick and it’s just as good as hazel left it 12 month and worked it the same as I would any other stick.
yates
Give it ago, some people make walking sticks from sprout stalks. Hard to believe but true

Hard to believe but true I believe there’s a variety of cabbage grown in the Channel Islands that’s used for making walking sticks 😊
panoma1
I have made some nice sticks out of dog rose! When the pithy core is removed, if chosen appropriately the hole is just the right size to fit the all-thread....used to fix the head on the shaft! I saw the bit about the cabbages but also it reported that the sprout stems used used were 20 foot long. Even more strange eBay has just sent me an email offering me a vintage sprout walking stick to buy. Talk about ‘Big Brother ‘ watching you. Dougy
It's pretty straight but it's now resting for 12 months in an aluminium tube. I'll see what it's like in a few months, it will burn better when it's dry anyway.
Lord Geordie
Didn’t even make an effort to keep the rose straight really, just hung it to dry. Removed the thorns which were very few and gave it a light rub down when seasoned. Few coats of danish oil and an antler handle/12G cart brass ferrule and bobs your beater! And if your wondering why the dog is hanging in the cupboard? He chewed his last chair leg
