kennett
Morning all, picked up my new beaters trailer project last night, and first job is a new floor. Hoping to use ply (for cheapness!) I want to water proof the under side before using it, so what is the best product to use?
B725
Several coats of black bitchumin paint should be ok, pre cut the ply wood first.
panoma1
Is there not a type of stick on plastic film/cladding you could use on the underside of the pre cut (to fit) floor panels? The panels could then be abutted on fitting, using silicon/mastic...... Edited October 20, 2019 by panoma1
oldypigeonpopper
hello, as above from B725, i would dilute the first coat to get into the grain Edited October 20, 2019 by oldypigeonpopper
ditchman
50/50 varnish thinners............then spray it with Dinatrol or similar.........
snow white
Don’t put cladding under plywood as it will trap water as B725 as said bitumen on bottom and round the edges that is most important part as water will get in there first if you can get some marine ply all the better but still treat it first
kennett
Perfect thanks all 🙂
Benthejockey
You could use stockboard instead? It's a bit more expensive than ply but it's made from recycled plastic so it wont rot or suffer from not being waterproof.
figgy
I wouldn't use plywood, even the marine stuff delaminated when constantly getting wet. Thick enough for flooring is very heavy. Scaffold boards are better, treat with old engine oil and won't have to worry about them for years. I did look at stock board, but I can get marine ply from work for free which kind of makes it a no brainer!
Rob525
Yea use marine ply of a decent thickness, dont worry about weight if its being pulled by something bigger than a quad as keeping the centre if gravity low will help its handling And I agree about the bitchumin or use schultz under body seal Edited October 22, 2019 by Rob525

If you do make sure it is supported about every 18inches as it will eventually distort with temperature changes It will certainly outlast anything else. Not cheap in the thicker sizes. snow white
Paint the floor with cheap paint then while still wet throw some sand on top to stop people slipping. To make better job repaint after it’s dry I done this on floor of boat lasted years
kenholland
at the end of each season , just give it the once over , and keep on top of it , if it needs a touch up in places , job done, that way it should last a a fair few years . willj
Why would you not use timber decking boards that you get out of DIY store, give it a good coat of treatment before you fix it down and leave a small gaps between them, 5mm to allow for any water and dirt from foot traffic above, at least this way you will allow air to flow through whilst not in use and it can also be cleaned out at the end of each shoot. Not so good when the trailer goes through wet mud and it spits up through the floor.
ClemFandango
also the OP already stated he can get ply for free. Just make sure you treat the end grain as well as the underside as has already been said. Marine ply is a bit of a marketing gimmick. It's just a different glue. If water gets into the wood it still delaminates all the same.
