I was wondering if anyone takes PPI drugs long term and if they have noticed any side effects. Iv'e been having mild anxiety and irregular heart beat [not sure which came first..😄] and seen a link to possible long term use of omeprazole, The doc has just given me repeat prescription 20mg over several years.. Im thinking a change of diet and coming off them, its the only prescription drug I take.

Anxiety  can make palpitations  worse , try taking it at bed time  with your doctors approval  its a slow release  drug . Been on it for years its to stop acid coming up into my oesophagus I had a small, growth  there and could have turned  to cancer .that drug cleared it up . Talk to your doctor  see if there is anything else .

cheers, it was reflux and a hospital visit that caused me to be on it, the general advice for omeprazole is take for months rather than years, might resort to a cup of peptac liquid before bed and watch the diet

I have taken omeprazole since 2012 for reflux. I take it about a couple of hours before bedtime to allow it to get into the system as it was overnight or early morning I used to throw up on a regular basis before.

I also use a wedge pillow topped with a feather pillow too.

Omeprazole long term can deplete absorbtion of vitamin B12 so I take B12 tablets too as B12 deficiency can cause lots of health problems.

Correct it also reduces  the folic acid.  I take a tablet every day for that . I don't eat lots of greens in my diet .

I was prescribed folic acid !...... Thanks for the replies everyone..... just lifted this from the online doctor..😉

2.  Avoid taking omeprazole long-term

Only take omeprazole for the short-term, anywhere from 10 days to eight weeks. Very few medical conditions require omeprazole to be taken for longer periods. Continual use of omeprazole not only raises the risk of side effects in general, but it also raises the risk of more serious side effects. If the medicine seems to require long-term use, talk to a healthcare provider about alternative therapies.

5.  Take omeprazole 30 to 60 minutes before eating

Chances are the doctor’s prescription, medication guide, or package will have an instruction that reads, “Take before a meal.” The general practice is to take omeprazole 30 to 60 minutes before eating.

I've been taking omeprazole for around 5 or 6 years my wife much longer, morning and evening. Its to stop the effects of other drugs mainly that cause indigestion, acid reflux and those hic burp things. No side effects. Taking them is better than not taking them if that makes sense.

If I eat food that I'm prone to indigestion with, such as cucumber or radish to name a couple I occasionally take an extra one.

Hope you go on ok

I've been on Lansaprsole for about 4 years after bouts of gastritis and lots of acid reflux and it's been a life changer! Admitedly I put on a lod of weight as I was no longer having to ride the porcelain pony  after eating faty food. Annual magnesium blood tests and all good. I've tried cutting down and it gets to about 3 days and the gastritis starts up and I start feling rough. Brilliant stuff.

I've been on Omeprazole since working the age of 28 and I'm 65 now - no side effects and no issues.  My stomach produces excessive quantities of acid - the drug blocks this process.

Acid reflux (getting bile in the back of my throat which is ghastly) is caused by the type of foods I eat and when I do it relative to gong to bed.

Absolute No Nos:

Cucumber (its water and cellulose) the body can't digest the cellulose so produces acid to break it down - no nutritional value.  Avoid.

Cheese/Pizza/Curry/anything oily as an evening meal - I'm OK if its before 7pm after that I'll get reflux.

Desserts with a lot of cream eaten late in the evening are also an issue (hopelessly sweet tooth).
