Houseboat

Was watching TV program which had houseboats in the background and people walking past. Got me thinking how vulnerable these living boats are.

I know a terraced street you are walking right next to the front door, but with a boat you can climb on it.

How do people feel safe and keep their valuables safe ?

A lot of the proper houseboats I have seen are in proper berths with controlled access and club houses and the such.

I have also seen live aboards on canals and the broads. Most usually have a dog or are on seasonal moorings with other users about.

People who live in houseboats do so (generally) because they are unable to access more conventional forms of accommodation.  Sad fact but increasingly true

Used to be massive amounts of sex offenders / pedo’s living on the canal’s.

They’d move every 28 days across a county lines and if they never stayed over 28 days wouldn’t have to sign the register!

And a lot of them are regularly polluting the River lea in North London/Essex/Herts. Diesel spill, general waste and worse and a lot appear to be the type that would decry anyone else doing so.

I've just checked and if no fixed address you have to go to a police station once a week....so actually more often.

Being on the sex offenders register (SOR) - Stop It Now

I think they updated it after some coppers got word of what was happening and went ballistic (rightly so). I believe they now have to notify the Police if moved or staying somewhere for more than 3 days.
