100milesaway
Why are we not using Drones to police the French shores and at the first sign of a launching send a well aimed stinger into the dingies whilst they are still in the shallows. Or is that too logical like the water cannons we should be using? From Auntie

ditchman
fixed wing drones have a good air time.......but part of the problem is encroaching on the sovreign airspace of France

Flashman
Border Force did buy drones some 4 years ago. They weren’t suitable for flying over the sea - salt water - and failed almost immediately. They also had jet skis to spot them, yet they still come across. It’s not the technology - it’s the lack of political will. The Tories were keen to make it work - it was a vote winner if successful - but the Civil Service blocked it at every turn.

Right this isn't advertised but it isn't kept secret either. There is monitoring of the channel on a regular basis. There are aircraft that fly all the way down from Doncaster to Lydd Airport. From Llydd the plane which is fitted with cameras for day and night operation flys up and down the channel roughly from Margate down to Dungeness point. They also have big drones like reaper type jobbies that operate out of a hanger down there. these operate for many many hours. All of this is going on all of the time. Why I don't know what for but it must cost a fortune. I found this out by using flight radar. I happened to click on what appeared to be plane flying around and then I could see that it had been flying up and down the channel for a long time after it had flown down from Doncaster. By checking the plane reg no. It showed the company operating it and on it went. Another time I found that the drones were being used and all about them. Its all out there if you look for it but it isn't advertised. Why is anyone's guess because it has no effect on the immigration numbers. Nothing is mentioned about this. Edit. I just had a look and there was nothing up. I haven't looked for some time so it might have been scrapped or tomorrow something might be on patrol. If they could be then taken directly back to France they would very quickly get the message and stop trying to come. Also they would abandon the camps in Calais and the French would be rid of them as well So simple, so obvious

Miserableolgit
Yep, I've clocked flight activity over the channel via Flight Radar and adsbexchange too. I dare say the data collected goes toward - what?
Raja Clavata
The French view people leaving their shore by dinghy as our problem and not theirs. The fact we pay France (significant amounts) to curb these small boat crossings reinforces the French position. The fact that the previous government agreed to increase the payments to France without a clear return just goes to show the level of their incompetence. The detention centre the money is supposed to fund will not be ready until the end of 2026 and exactly how that will help appears unclear. The fact that leaving the EU actually weakened our ability to deal with the issue should not be lost on anybody, and particularly those who voted for Brexit on the basis of immigration in the first place The fact of the matter is that WE are our own worst enemies on this topic.
