TIGHTCHOKE
It appears that ASDA are considering a U turn on Self Checkouts in some of their stores. I know from talking to staff at LIDL, their management have not brought self checkouts in and blame it on the amount of theft they would expect. Whereas ALDI have self checkout tills in their newer stores and have at least one member of staff monitoring things to prevent theft. Most places now have cctv watching you while you present the goods and register the bar codes. It would be nice to see more staffed tills across the supermarkets. Genghis
Only issue I have with self checkouts is that they’re mostly card only now. Other than that I prefer them.
oldypigeonpopper
Hello, I never thought about the self service tills being that easy to steal a few items from a full shopping list, 🤔

If it is noticed the assistant accepts you made a genuine mistake. Used to happen when the earlier versions were told that carrots were going through, when actually they were putting avocado pears through. 12gauge82
You can scan as you shop in tesco, which I find handy when busy. I don't like the fact it puts people out of jobs and it must make it very easy to commit theft.

Yes I've noticed that when you get an "unexpected item in the bagging area please wait' the staff member invariably just cancels the error and walks off without checking what you have put through
Westley
I don't know why they are worrying about a couple of items being stolen, when the current trend of walk into the store, select what you want, and walk back out, unchallenged, is rife ? Usually involving high value spirits.

iHOWEY
They are a pain to use for the average joe who ain’t trying their luck with a five finger discount. Half the time the person manning it has to come and scan something because it hasn’t worked anyways. Gone are the days of 20-25 checkouts fully operational. Making shopping a breeze. Now we are herded into little pens and expected to scan our own things 😂
marsh man
They have now started a self service in Waitrose where I pop in , dead easy to use , well it need to be if I use it and very well attended by friendly staff , the last time I used it my shopping trolley was half blocking the way out , the young lady came over and said you can put the trolley over the low checking out point which was a good idea as it reduced the bending down , one slight problem I had was buying two pieces of fish , one Cod and the other one was Haddock , the chap put them in the same box with two price labels on , when at the self service check out I scanned one of the labels and then you had to put it down before you could scan the other one , this was fine until you removed the item and the buzzer went off so the lady had to come and sort it out , you could had easily scanned one and no one would had been any wiser , but not worth the aggro for a small piece of Cod . I for one, will NOT be attempting to stop them ! I did once, in Morrisons. Stopped a Female shoplifter, recovered around £350 of spirits, got stuck with a hypodermic, never got as much as a thank you from Morrisons. Nah, help yourselves, the store Management couldn't care less, why should I ?

The thing is, if they do it confidently and not looking round giving out guilty "vibes' nobody pays any attention to them because nobody is looking out to spot them. I was under the assumption that the 'bagging area' was weight calibrated to the items scanned ? Maybe not all self service tills, but all the large Tesco that I use they are 🫡

Minky
Well we love the self service system in Tesco. the Mrs gets the scanner by showing the club card under the scanner. I get a big trolley and load the tote bags into it.. By the time I get in there she has got the bananas to the scales. using the scanner we soon get round the store. when finished we go straight through the paying area. The transfer is quick and either of us pay using the App on out phone,s. There is no messing about queuing up for ages for people to unload their purchases onto the conveyor belt and THEN having to put these into bags and then loading these bags back into the trolley. THEN waiting for PEOPLE to decide how they want to pay either by having to go through a rack of card or raking through the purse trying to find the right money OR in the odd case having to put stuff back because they haven't go the money. Nowadays they don't run all the operator tills so the ones that ARE operated have a fair old queue. If I were Tesco I would remove the operator tills down to one or two and use the checkout staff on shelf staking or fewer staff. Then put more self service tills in and more shelves for extra products. We hardly ever use cash nowadays. The only place that I use cash is the weekly sub at the the rifle shooting club. every payment is online and I almost see that the only people who use cash are likely to be on some sort of fiddle. it is slowly becoming like the TV advert where the bloke is at a roadside stall and wants to buy a bag of spuds. He's got a fiver BUT it's Crypto only. Even all of the grandkids have bank accounts and when we give them a draw it is via direct transfer or NSI bonds. Even if they want ice creams from the van it's just click it on the phone. It appears as if an amount of people on here are looking to basically steal and fiddle from the shops. Not in the Tesco that I use ! But,,,, in Morrissons I once bought a meal deal from the hot food area [chicken and wedges] and as it was late, my box was filled to the brim with the remaining wings and wedges 😁 This set off the overweight alarm at the self service till, but was cleared as you say, as it was obviously not me trying to steal stuff 😆 Must say, that I would never steal stuff in that or any fashion, as it simply isn't worth it 🤷♂️

You can exclude me from that short list , we might had been brought up in a poor and fairly rough area but we learnt to respect other people's few items that they had worked hard for , if anyone was caught nicking someones else's stuff then they got a few slaps with no involvement from the police , what we never had we never missed and I found those that had next to nothing were the most honest people a going , now it's a totally different way of life and nicking stuff is the easy way out with very little deterrent if caught . Got to be honest, you've lost me at your final paragraph, the shooting community is probably one of the most law abiding in the country. What on earth gives you the idea people on here want to steal?
