daystate 177
So me and the mrs have decided to tie the knot. Thing is were both of the same view that although the big fancy church is lovely and all that its not for us. After 2 kids a house cars etc we just want simple. Were looking at a runaway wedding then come back chuck a party and say surprise! We did it lol. After our mates wedding coming up they have blew 17k on it for 1 day we rather 16k in the bank and a grand on a day. What were your budgets and thoughts on our choice would you be peed if you were not invited to a friends wedding if they did like we want Atb adam
Archie-fox
I got married on the beach in Aruba.. £4,000 Then a big party when we came home £2,000 So 6k for the lot and the wedding and honeymoon in one... Still quite expensive but not as much as most pay, plus you only have people you want there..
kent
My sister in law has just taken on a wedding franchise, the money some spend is astonomic. She is getting married herself very soon don't ask the price . I got a deal with a hotel as I built them a conservatory for the purpose so we came to an agreement lets say. Spend more on the honeymoon IMO the right thing to do, its very true to say you only actually really know about half the people at the reception and the rest is just a blur to the groom within a week
kennett
We got married in the village church and then had a hog roast reception at the village hall (admittedly just refurbished). It was a really nice day, and quite a few friends have nicked the idea so must have been ok! All in, including a few favours from friends and family it probably cost us around 5k, with presents paying for the honey moon. My mum ordered all the flowers direct from Holland which saved quite a chunk

mel b3
Me and her good self got married just over two years ago, we considered a big wedding, we wrote a guest list but stopped at around six or seven hundred, the cost would have been insane, weve both been married before and i was a widower so my kids were consulted before we decided what to do, in the end we told the kids and our parents and brothers and sisters, we got married in a registery office with twenty family members as guests and then we all went for a meal, we couldnt go on honeymoon due to prior commitments but we managed a couple of days in wales, we told everyone by text, out of hundreds of people nobody got upset and everyone was happy for us, and probably relieved that they didnt have to buy a present lol. birdsallpl
It's your day and only your day. Although in saying that I guess you should consider your parents. If they are fine with it I would do exactly what you two want to do and *****r what anyone else thinks. You won't lose any true friends if you don't invite any at all. ehb102
I love the runaway wedding idea, especially as you already have children together. I did the whole church thing, it was BMW expensive and to the benefit of other people. It did go a long way towards strengthening bonds with the extended family and family friends, but you already have a nuclear family together so you're in a different position. As for friends getting the hump if they don't get to see you get married, they must be fairly self-centred if they do. They are a allowed to be a little disappointed but it's not about them. westmids1987
Married few months ago, nice simple registry office with parents, grandparents, siblings and the lad then off to local rugby club for party, family and friends provided cars, food, photos and whatever else was needed as their gift to us,was a fantastic day surrounded by thoses we wanted there not those we felt we needed to invite. You don't need to spend tons,i think ppl forget that it is a lifelong commitment to each other not just who can spend the most on the biggest party
Medic1281
I got married in 2008, went to Antigua and got married on the beach at a very exclusive resort/hotel. Came back and had a party at my house with a live band, bar and hog roast. The total cost was about £15k. The most expensive bit was the divorce 18months later, cost £43k in legal fees to go to court 3 times to get her to settle!!
grimey121uk
I got married in April this year and me and the Mrs were of the opinion of spend the cash on ourselves! I know someone who spent 20k on their wedding inviting anyone and everyone, yet they still live in rented accommodation and constantly moan about not owning their own property. We spent less than 2k (inc dress and rings) on our wedding and had around 20 guests who were all close friends/family and I wouldn't of done it any other way. Although I enjoyed the day by the time it got to 4PM I was just looking forward to going home and sleeping. Some friends turned their nose up a bit but hey I spent all my savings on a house deposite (and guns), spend 17k on a single day to feed others or a house which will last forever? Each to their own I guess, but more money doesn't mean you love each other more, in fact the one of the leading causes of divorce is money problems. bruno22rf
Rented a wedding dress-I already had a suit-borrowed a mates Roller and, after the church, we had a reception at the Kingfisher sporting club near Milton Keynes for just over 70 people-we put £250 behind the bar and never ran out as the manager "found" a case of wine and gave it to us !!!. Went to scotland for the honeymoon and we are still married 22 years later-total cost was less than £1500

rimfire4969
I have been married 18 years and if I was to do it again I would get married abroad in the Caribbean and invite all my family and friends. Natural selection would keep the numbers down. All paying their own way i should add. Edited August 24, 2014 by rimfire4969
Dougy
£500.00 all in, Not being a tight bottom but i ain't buying drinks for folk to get drunk, and they can feed themselves. We had a few friends (well a couple, we don't have many ) round a local pub for a few beers and a chin wag. Had a good time These folk that spend silly amounts in the thousands must have money to burn. It will not secure a life long marriage, well not all anyway. The biggest thing people fall out over is money,so why not reduce your expenditure on your mortgage say, and pay a load of that if you need to spend loads on something. loriusgarrulus
2nd marriage for both of us, 17 years ago in July. Got the kids their new school shoes and trousers early. Made the two younger lads waistcoats and bow ties, got the 18 year old his first suit and OH one in the sales. Found a nice wedding dress for me and bridesmaid dress for my daughter in British Heart Foundation as I didn't have a proper wedding dress first time round. Friend made the Flowers. Another friend who was a model did the hair, nails and make up. Another friend drove her large car for the wedding transport. Hired a mini bus for the rest of the guests. Had 30 guests at the Registry office and went back to the house for a buffet we and the rest of the family had mucked in and made ourselves and left in cool bags in the kitchen with cool blocks in to keep fresh. Made and decorated my own wedding cake. Cousin did the photos. Couple of mates met everyone back at the house with drinks trays and had a party that went around the house and into garden as a warm dry day. Booze including champagne from the Coop that did free glass loan if drinks bought from them. Had party at local village hall that was licensed in the evening with buffet done by them (with a disco that was supplied by a friend who was a DJ as a wedding present) for all other friends and work mates. Went of to Crete for 10 days two days later. Total cost about £3000. Andrew was my first boyfriend at school when 15 and him 16. Fell out over something silly like you do as teenagers 2 years later. Met up again 25 years later when both divorced from 1st spouses and been together ever since.

Sir_Adam
We got married just two short weeks ago, let me tell you it gets expensive and quick. Is the little things, like flowers gifts and favours which add up that your not expecting. I dread to think how much it cost me, certainly north of 15k and that's before honeymoon plus post wedding holiday. Is love to know how someone above managed it for two grand as I'm pretty sure my other halfs dress cost near that alone. (Thankfully I didn't pay for that) but your only meant to do it once I guess. I stopped tellin people things where for a wedding and then I noticed the cost going down mention the 'w' word and they fetch out a different price list. Money grabbing ****! OddJob
Got married on the 2nd August. £400 for church £500 marquee in a nice country pub £500 BBQ by pub for 50 Lights bought from eBay, solar power £10 a pack. Invites and order of service designed and printed by self. Get ideas from Pintrest and Etsy. Dress etc was extra naturally. Basically cheap equals more time, research and creativity from you both. We decorated and got cake and flowers from family to reduce that. It's not easy.
