motty Posted October 2, 2014 Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 I received a text after work on Tuesday, asking whether I could make it for some pigeon shooting the following day. Fenboy had found a couple of thousand pigeons tucking in on three bean stubbles. I gratefully accepted the invite. My mate Sam was supposed to join us, so that we took a field each. Unfortunately, Sam had to call off last minute due to a sickness bug. I met up with Fenboy at just before 10am yesterday. I could see pigeons on the move everywhere. Fenboy was already half set up, so I just had to pick my spot and get set myself. I quickly chose a likely looking spot and erected the hide out in the open on the edge of the field. I quickly put out a magnet, flapper, flocked full bodies and shells and an angel. I immediately got some pigeons into the decoys and therefore more dead birds to add to the pattern. I could hear each of Fenboy's shots as I was downwind from him and he was getting a good bit of sport, too. The sport was steady all day. I wish I had filmed the day's events. Firstly, I shot a difficult triple. I had a cracking left and right that stood out - the first crossing at 35 yards and the second crossing at 55 yards. I was using my combo of Fiocchi Top one 7s and IM briley in the Xtrema. The bit I really missed filming, was on a few occasions having 200+ pigeons decoying together. This hasn't happened to me for a long time. I held off shooting at these big groups. A couple of things didn't help our cause. There were several cereal stubbles that the pigeons didn't mind dropping on. Also the unattended bean stubble was getting plenty of attention in the afternoon. I reached the 100 mark by 2.30pm, and that's when the tap was all but switched off for me. I kept shooting for another hour or so. The pigeons were dropping in everywhere but where I was. The final tally was 110 pigeons and 4 ferals. I'm pretty sure Fenboy killed 95 pigeons and a couple of ferals. So a big thanks to Fenboy for a great day out. fenboy Posted October 2, 2014 Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 Your welcome , I owed you a good day, I am sure if someone had been on that third field they would also have had a 100 + there was a amazing amount of birds about, hopefully the stubble will be around for me to have another go next week. I actually finished on 98 and a feral , the dog picked up 3 out of the long grass that was behind me after you left so only my wayward shooting prevented a 100+ bag for myself. This was the first time I have had the Lab out for a full days pigeon shooting and he did very well , I kept his retrieves to a minimum but he did recover his first wounded birds which went well. He did attempt to pick one or two up by the tail which ended with him holding just a mouthful of feathers , no doubt things like that will improve with experience. Wish there were more beans in my area as it's such a big draw late on , used to be grown in abundance but gone right out of fashion round here sadly.
