poontang
As many on here probably know myself and a friend have been observing and photographing a pair of local Barn Owls for the last few months. We've been watching as the adult birds set up home in a box on a local farm and raised a young family. We've spent a huge amount of time around the birds, watching as they the male hunted and brought food to the brooding female. Recently the female has emerged too, and like the male she seems quite relaxed about our presence, allowing us the opportunity to get some shots. We knew there were owlets in the box, but until recently we didn't know how many...until they finally made an appearance a couple of weeks ago. There looks to be 3 females and 1 male. We managed a few fleeting shots of the youngsters as they first emerged, and took food from their parents, but due to the location of the box (a very well shaded corner of the field) and the fact that they don't usually show their faces until 9.30/10.00pm getting any decent shots in near darkness is virtually impossible. Over the last week or so the youngsters have really progressed and are now flying short distances, but the most amazing thing is how tolerant they are of us. Even though we're well hidden behind netting and pushed into a hedgeline some distance from them they practice their flying/hunting with no real issues. The eldest bird even moved to sit on a branch no more than 20 feet away so she could get a better view of us!! I've added a few pics, mostly taken with flash (not ideal, but needs must) which show just how well developed the young owls now are, and just how chilled out they are around us.I hope you enjoy them.
