Shot Pigeons not taken away

What is it with people - they shoot pigeons and then just leave them in the hedge.

Now I know they are destroying the farmers crop and that some on here will take the attitude of so what the farmers wants them gone.

BUT - This guy (who has permission to shot over 3 OSR fields that are 5 miles from the main farm as he lives 100 yards from them) has just abandoned the dead pigeons in the hedge around where he was shooting for any passing walker to find, no attempt to conceal or put them out of view.

The problem I have is that he and I are the only 2 allowed on these fields.

There is a well used footpath that runs right through the fields. Trouble is that all of the fields have a nice grass headland around them which people think are extensions of the footpath. It's a tricky place to shoot as you need to keep an eye out for straying walkers. What are people going to think finding dead pigeons - I sure as hell don't want to loose the permission if complaints are made.

I know who the guy is and I will be having words with him about his future behaviour/standards. If he doesn't want them don't shoot them or give me ring and i will take them off his hands. Whatever put them out of site.

Rant over

That was no rant just sensible views.

Tell the farmer about it. If he is sensible he will throw the other chap off. The local newspapers would have a field day if this sort of thing was made public and the farmer wouldn't want that would he?

We are aware of similar shooters, on some of our permissions, they fuel the anti shooting brigade. I find it difficult to shoot birds then discard them, We always endeavour to put them into the food chain which takes a lot of time and effort. Last year we shot for nine months and shot 7.7K the only birds we disposed of were the thawed decoys which I left as carrion thrown into woods or hedges not on display.

This is sometimes a contraversial subject and there are many out there that are of the opinion the pigeons are Just pests, the farmer wants to get rid, foxes will eat them, blah blah blah.

Personally dumping woodpigeons boils my ****! even if people can't offload them to a gamedealer, they wil feed someone or someones ferrets. The humble woodpigeon deserves more respect in my opinion.

I totally agree dumping anything we shoot in places that might be seen by others, could give us all a bad name.

Personally I would not say anything to the farmer before you have spoken to the other shooter, if you get no joy then have a word with the farmer and tell him your reasons, but every farmer is different and you might just get a flea in your ear.

I remember some years back having the same problem with two shooters who always left their lunch rubbish, empty shell cases and dead birds in the hedgerow, I spoke to them about it and they just asked 'well who are you' and told me to go away, so I popped into the farm and told him what was going on, his reply was..... 'they are doing a good job and if you don't like what they are doing you don't have to come on the ground'

I could not believe my ears, mind you the whole farm was a dump.
I agree with some of the other posts that it does not look good in the publics eyes but unfortunately there are some inconsiderate shooters out there and their attitude towards other shooters and the land they shoot over makes me wonder how they ever got their SGC.

I know you should not have to-do this but If you do not get any joy from the shooters or farmer I guess you could always take a shovel and bury the birds.

I agree it is easy to be discreet when having to dispose of quarry that is not going to be used, but some people do not have the same sensitivity.

Those I have spoken to seem quite surprised that its seen as being unacceptable.

Hanging dead birds on fences (as some sort of deterrent ?) near public footpaths and roads irritates me and we even had a lamper that hung dead foxes off the nearest branch, regardless of who would come across them, the Farmer had a word with him after receiving complaints.

I actually drove a couple of miles back to a spot the other day after remembering one pigeon that had disappeared over the hedge in crash landing mode, I want all those 40p's accounted for but it doesn't matter so much to others and to be honest I don't understand why other shooters get their knickers in such a knot over it. Folk have better things to do than spend their free time trying to get pests into the food chain and a lot of the time it would cost more in fuel to get rid than they are worth. Makes no sense.

Only time I ever dump pigeons are the ones that have been out a couple of times as decoys. Maggots in my decoy fridge ain't nice. 😷

However, those dumped are carefully hidden and not in full public view. Absolutely no excuse to leave any other rubbish, cart cases etc, shows an arrogant lack of respect for both the landowner and the countryside imo.

Following the logic on this thread, why is it acceptable to leave pigeons that have been used as decoys? Has no-one thought of freezing them til bin day then dumping them in your own dustbin. Personally, apart from the odd one for the flapper I'm too tight to take out good pigeons as decoys and so use plastic ones until, I've shot a few to use on the day then take them home to the freezer ready for sale.

I remember an incident that occured to me many years ago. I was decoying pigeons on the newly cut hay, they were coming for the exposed clover. I had been shooting for a couple of hours and had some 40 birds down, when a police Landrover appeared on the skyline. I unloaded my gun, put it down in the hide and came onto the field to meet with the Bobby. He had another person in the vehicle who he claimed was the Secretary of the local Pigeon Fanciers Club and he had complained about racing pigeons being shot. I assured them both that I was only shooting wood pigeons. By now, the aforementioned 'Secretary' was out of the vehicle and wandering around amongst my decoys, which were all dead birds. He kept picking up feathers and examining them and then searching for more. By now, I had seen enough, I spoke to the Bobby, explaining that I had let them have a good nose around and they could see that I had only shot woodpigeons. They both apologised and left. An hour or so later I had sent my dog along the hedge to my right, to look for a runner. The dog returned with a dead racing pigeon. Upon inspection, I discovered a mixed pile of around 70 pigeons in the ditch at the back of the hedge. After speaking with the Farmer it transpired that he had allowed a couple of 'Cowboys' to shoot there the previous day and they had obviously been spotted shooting the non woodpigeons belonging to a local Pigeon Fancier, they never returned or were seen again, but nobody else has ever been allowed to shoot there either.

Here we go again.

While I can understand the annoyance of and stupidity of dumping birds in public view I can equally fully understand the dumping of birds out of public view. Not everyone has an outlet.

We take what we can use and the remainder is dumped; it isn't an issue with our landowners.

As I've mentioned before, anyone who wants our decoyed crows, jackdaws, pigeons, shotgunned rabbits etc can PM me with your contact details with a view to collecting any we shoot if they feel so strongly about it.

Wow!! That's about 70p each!!! Which pub is this??

60p each here, but of course beer costs them less than they sell it for, well you would hope, maybe that's the real reason pubs are closing right, left and centre..

Also the swap is based on birds in feather intact, they pay over £1 each from butcher ( of course they are dressed) so it's a good deal for them also. Used to be 4 per beer 😕

How many birds are we talking ? Like PC said if using thawed birds for decoys . At the end of the day they will be ditched and left for fox food as they cant go back into food chain . So if were talking 10 - 15 birds there is a fare chance they were decoys .
