fortune
I ain't got much time for local councils. Perhaps they will sell them off as curio shops along with any piece of public infrastructure that they can flog off to pay for the officials. http://www.piratefm.co.uk/news/latest-news/1974154/cornwalls-councillors-could-get-a-pay-rise/ Edited August 21, 2016 by fortune

Rimfireboy
Just use McDoogles or Fried Chicken shop toilets. Usually clean and they don't seem to mind, if they even notice?
panoma1
Another example of local politicians levying more tax on all ratepayers to bankroll their daft PC "right on" pet projects, so they can chuck money at minority projects/political groups because it benefits them and/or shows the council in a good light......and of course the extra money can be used for to pay their own ever increasing salaries! We already pay for these services via the council tax, why should we be paying twice? I can understand people taking direct action when they are sick and tired of being ripped off! Not many of them in Porthcothan. Parish councils strapped for cash and try and make it back the best they can. If its a choice of paying 20p or the toilets closing I will get my cash out. bruno22rf
I would go and use the local council office toilets - as far as I'm aware the council is duty bound to provide Toilet facilities on public health grounds and if you don't have any money then I would love to hear their reason for not allowing the use of their office loo. mel b3
the local authority that i work for , used to have a public toilet in every town centre , some of the larger town centres had two . slowly but surely theyve closed them all one at a time until only one remains(and that just happens to be close to the town hall) . its a real shame as most of them have been closed due to constant vandalism and the costs of the repairs. one of my previous jobs for the local authority was doing a few running repairs to the public toilets , one toilet in particular would get regular letters of complaint from a local resident , he would rant and rave about gay men using this particular toilet to meet up for eerr fun (dont ask me how he knew what they were doing in there lol) , the mystery letter writer smashed the pans on several occasions , we eventually fitted stainless steel pans , so he filled them with cement lol. the door on those particular toilets got locked that day and it hasnt been opened since. i saw a news article several weeks / months ago , some local authorities have been forcing town centre shops to open their toilets to the public(and sometimes upgrade them at great cost) , i can see the thinking behind it , but it just doesnt seem fair somehow. FatFreddysCat
And the really annoying thing is they they lock them at 7pm around here. So when you really need them on the walk home from the pub they're not open.

They just choose to spend the money on something else!

Lloyd90
The one in my home town spend thousands on some stood up on end railway sleepers in a horse shoe pattern. I asked my mum what that's about, she said they just blowing the budget before the new financial year so they don't get less money next year. A few miles away some huge beaches need serious cleaning, which would draw in tourism and revenue for the whole area, but instead they waste money on this junk!! ph5172
Here in Newquay they are all 20p, even the ones at the top end of town slightly off the tourist track. A lot of people don't have a 20p coin or a pile of them for the day, they also spend a fortune in the car parks (£6 upwards for 4 hours) so I can see why people get annoyed. Without the tourism the town is dead (look out of season). A majority of the chain pubs are good at letting people use the facilities, even those with door staff on during the day at weekends are happy enough to let you in. Should you have to pay to take a pee especially on holiday whilst supporting the local economy (and council car parks) I think not. Should you pay to take a pee in your home town that you pay your council tax in.. No

A few miles away some huge beaches need serious cleaning, which would draw in tourism and revenue for the whole area, but instead they waste money on this junk!! i watched a tv programme about this (probably 10yrs ago now) ,it was a government initiative that forced local authorities to build things like this , it was all to do with the amount of town bypasses that had been built and they all looked the same , these works of art (yeah right) were put in place so that towns could be identified and also have their own identity , we have loads of them around here , some are relevant to the area that theyre situated , but others just look like random piles of scrap/ concrete/wood/metal. the island closest to my house had a pair of old concrete lions installed , apparently they had been bought at a massive cost from some stately home(the cost caused quite a stir at the time) , personally i would have much rather that they had kept the public toilets open for another couple of years and put a sign on the island . they also did a similar thing around this way by painting railway bridges , and putting metal horses along railway lines so that commuters could see them as went past in the trains. I wouldn't mind paying 20p to use a toilet. My problem is that I rarely carry money these days snap , i probably have cash in my pocket about half dozen times a year , and only when im on my way to pay for something in cash. wymberley
It's not clear whether the charge is to enter the building or the individual WC. Should it be the latter as is the norm, surely the answer is to put the machine on the inside of the door.

Chris Bb
20p for having a pee is taking the pee in my book. And I wouldn't describe propping the door open as "vandalism" unless there's something we're not being told. Just to be clear, I can't stand mindless vandalism and would put perpetrators in the stocks for us all to throw rotten fruit at.
