Dibs85
without wanting to start the debate about whether or not to store your rifle with/without bolt, (I chose to store mine separately in the my safes separate top ammo locker, as I can get more guns in the cabinet without the bolts in!), does anybody have any handy storage tips for keeping bolts separately ie. margarine tubs, sandwich bags with a bit of oil in etc. would be interested to hear peoples storage ideas. Cheers
saddler
Use a plastic click-top sandwich box. Stored in an ammo safe

saddler
...and storing ANYTHING in leather is a good idea now? Must have missed that trade memo Bolt pouches or holsters are brilliant for taking to/from a shoot but are NOT a valid storage method. Konnie
Sorry Saddler, the bolt pouches are only for protection storage, not secure storage. My bolts if not in rifle are in pouch, locked in ammo safe, as mentioned by others, as was told on inspection bolt is classed as part of firearm. I don't think he actually specified mags locked up but did specify not left in the gun - I put them with the bolt so I don't forget, bad wording on my part

The leather tanning process involves harsh chemicals which will harm them, even without the fact that leather attracts moisture.

mel b3
thank you for the kind words regarding our bolt pouches gents. i did a fair bit of research into the damage that can be done to metals by leather , it followed two complaints that our leather products had caused corrosion on live rounds. after much digging , it appears that some leathers / tanning processes , can definitely cause corrosion to some metals(nickel in particular iirc) , especially if stored damp, but , weve yet to have a single real problem , i can only put that down to the types of leather that we use , and the tanning process that it has gone through . i have a .243 bullet wallet that has been sitting in my safe for around six years , the eight rounds that are sitting in the wallet , are as yet undamaged in any way, i also have a couple of knives that sit in their leather sheaths , as yet , they are also undamaged in any way , maybe that will change in the future , but im guessing that if it was going to happen , it would have happened by now. we sell approximately thirty bolt pouches per week , and around twenty bullet wallets , and have been doing so for a few years now , i feel sure that if any problems had arisen , we would have heard about it by now. purely guesswork from me here , but , it is most probably older tanning techniques that are more of an issue when it comes to damaging metals , and especially on objects that are stored in a wet condition , and without oil(bolts). like i said , thats purely guesswork on my part , i can only go on the evidence / information that i have . as for two complaints that we received , one of the wallets had obviously been lost in the field , and had been partly sitting in water for several weeks , a tide mark could clearly be seen , and the submerged rounds had indeed become tarnished , however , the dry rounds were still in perfect condition. the second complaint came from a facebook foxing page , that belongs to a guy that was selling our products , it transpired that the complaint was from a guy that had also been selling leather products , but when we turned up , he lost pretty much all of his customers , it was just dummy spitting so was of no concern whatsoever. I too have bullets (243 & 22LR ) that have been kept in the wallets made by Lin, and neither of them have cause corrosion or discolouring to the cases. They are top quality. scotslad
I tend to keep my bolts, mag and some ammo in different coloured plastic bags in a seperate safe so which ever rifle i'm taking outi know which bag i need to grab and everything i need is in it. Just a quick check is all thas needed.. Its not fancy but it works for me, i have always meant to improve on it small sandwhich boxes with calibre written on might be better but u lose too much space in the safe with boxes

Davyo
My FEO insisted bolts stored separate to rifles.Same when transporting which make total sense to me.I always stored the mag and bolts in the amo safe. And when traveling the bolt was always on my belt in one of Mels top notch pouches and bullets in his leather wallets. They never went in the safe though, bullets went back in along with the bolts but the holders stayed on my belt.Funny story being the bolt pouch though.Id driven down to the perm (25mls) only to reach in my coat pocket to find no bolt.So drove back home to collect it to find it wasn't in the safe either. The bloody thing was on my belt in Mels bolt holder on me all the time. jam1e
My FEO insists the bolts are removed and stored in ammo safe along with magazines I may be wrong, but i don't think it's a legal requirement is it? I'm also with West Mercia, and there was never any mention about separating bolts from my rifles. I wish FEO's would stick to the 'real' rules, rather than personal opinion.... I've been amazed over the years regarding different Forces non statuary so called 'rules'. Which are just more opinions.. James
Davyo
I wouldnt question a FEO as I think (personal opinion) that it's sensible to keep the bolt separate from the rifle when it's either in storage or not on your person. It is sorting however the different rules that each force has.Maybe that's why it's such a farce.
