steve_b_wales
I know this has been mentioned in the past, but I can't find the details. Basically, I am with RAC. I received a renewal quote this morning, and phoned them. They reduced the quote by £20 which now is £145:12. I contacted Green Flag, and they can offer more services for a quote of £100:08 or £110:88 if I pay by DD. This sounds good to me, but are they any good? TIGHTCHOKE
I have been with Green Flag for a couple of years since the RAC went silly on prices. Have called them out twice and been very happy with the cover. Green Flag are currently offering to beat your RAC or AA renewal by 50%
Mice!
At a saving of 50% bite there arm off. I was phoning RAC on and off for 7hrs the other week, wasn't an emergency as I had got to work but wouldn't have got home. Ended up sending a text msg to there hard of hearing service because no one was answering the phone, an hour later I get a call, out comes mechanic and it wasn't even rac, it was a local company. stevo_m
Give the RAC a chance, and let them know what GF are offering. I did the same with the AA and they matched the cost. I've done this for the last 5 years now and will continue to do this, I do get more benefits over GF with my policy so I'm happy. GF use a network of local garages, the RAC and AA use a fleet of their own vehicles, which increases the overheads (as far as I'm led to believe anyway)

Green Flag are currently offering to beat your RAC or AA renewal by 50% Regarding the 50%, when I phoned them this morning, this wasn't the case, although I can't remember why this was. The discount worked out at around 30%. I've just got back in touch with RAC and mentioned about the quote I had off Green Flag, and, lo and behold, 'they' have been allowed to offer a further reduction on their 2nd quote. They could not match Green Flags quote, but have offered me a package, including onward travel, which I didn't realise I was not covered for this past 12 months, for £120:61 by continous monthly payment. It's just under £10 more than Green Flag, so I will more than likely stay with them.
AVB
Green Flag have very, very poor reviews on Trusted Trader and the like which is why I didn't go with them. I got my renewal with RAC down to something like £150 from £240.
Jason_ox
Check with your bank, if you have a fee paying account you may already have breakdown cover, we do and have phone, gadget and travel insurances included as well as breakdown cover with the RAC. All for £12 a month.
Mice!
The other thing is Tesco vouchers, we but I mean the wife quite often get our Rac using them.
Del T
I suppose Green flag depend on the local mechanic being competent to fix or diagnose the fault. The reason we got rid was that my wife was stuck at the side of the road in the winter for the breakdown guy to diagnose the fault as the fuel pump wasn't getting power. Hmm well it's a mechanical pump not Electric pump lol. Also getting recovered by truck was strange, the distance was from where the recovery truck was coming from not from where you broke down. Eg. You wanted taking home after breaking down, say 20 miles and paid for recovery for upto 20miles when you took out the policy but the truck travelled 10 miles to get to you so could only take you 10 miles before charges were added!! It was a while back now but put us off them for life so just barter with the AA every year and get a good price. bobt
I have been with the RAC for 40 years, last year they price matched AA to £75, I got a letter from my bank for an account I dont use much (nothing in it) that RAC tried to take £230. Rac after an hour on the phone came down to £95 but needed a manager to confirm it, never did ring me back. I went with Autoaid for £43, ok they have an excess to pay, but I have not used the RAC for at least 6 years. https://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/
Ricko
I was with the RAC years ago, they took 3 hours to come out in a city centre. When I was with Green Flag they took 25 mins to come out after a deep snow storm in Coniston. Green Flag contract out to small garages who invariably are nearer. I get mine through a deal with my bank account but it's still done by Green Flag I don't bother with home start because if I can't get it going then they're not going to either, my local diesel specialist will either come out or recover me to there workshop nearby. Gordon R
Having used both - Green Flag - better by miles. I have never used them much at all, but when I had to - no comparison.

steve_b_wales
After weighing up the pro's and con's, and, considering the lower quote offered by the RAC, compared to their first renewal quote, I have decided to stay with them. Thanks to all who have offered advice etc.
tonker
I was with RAC for thirty years, with everything they do for the whole family cost £300 plus a year. Bought a new to us car which had been covered by their mechanics. Suffice to say the computer went whilst parked outside the house. when I called them out, they said it was an electrical fault not a breakdown, and because I live out in the sticks they charged the Mrs over a £100 to take the car back to the garage because we were more than ten mile from the garage, Needless to say when I got home I hit the roof as we had recovery to anywhere. They then told me not if I'm parked outside the house. No matter what I said they wouldn't have it, and had the cheek to want a renewal about a month later. You can guess where I told them to stick their £300, I went Green Flag. So now I run down RAC if I can. Loyalty counts for nowt where they are concerned

Bazooka Joe
Read this with interest, checked my AA DD, phoned up querying like for like, & got £90 knocked off....happy days.
Davyo
I think people think that being with RAC or AA gets you the best cover. They will still us independent 3rd party garages to assist or recover you.AA said their recovery driver couldn't find me (parked up on the main road from Newcastle to Tynemouth).Ended up leaving it and getting my wife to collect me.Both my new cars come with AA,hoping I never need them.Green flag & start rescue have been fantastic with the shooting buses though and like others say a policy under £50. E.w.
Go with Green Flag as they will use the nearest recovery service to you the AA & RAC are something of a joke by comparison.
Bazooka Joe
Horses for Courses, the times that I've needed the AA they have been 100%.
BrowningB525
I can't recommend start rescue enough. They are cheap, they offer a discount on renewal not an increase and when I had to use them, the driver turned up promptly and they took my car where I asked. Del T
Horses for Courses, the times that I've needed the AA they have been 100%. Same here. When the Rac wouldn't come to get my dad's Van going I just phoned my AA breakdown and they came and got it running with no quibbles. Bearing in mind my dad had been a member of the Rac for probably 30yrs plus and paid up on time every year with no quibbling on price they still wouldn't send a man out as a gesture of goodwill "you've not paid for home start" or whatever its called.!! Flyboy1950
I use Autoaid, for £43.00 a year its got all the benefits of the "Big Boys" and they have now dropped the stipulation that you had to reclaim costs from them, they now pay the attending garage direct. There is no excess charge. I broke down on a restricted 2 lane section of the M5 a few years ago on a Bank Holiday Sunday and they had a local garage to me before the councils obligatory recovery team arrived. After getting my car and passengers off the motorway, the attending mechanic then spent 3 hours on the side of the road sorting the problem out at no extra charge to me. Brilliant service, cant recommend them highly enough.
Tam
It's a bit late now Steve - I was with Aviva, formerly norwich union rescue. I specified trailer cover in the event anything happend whilst towing my boat. This year the axle snapped internally & when phoned (RAC do their cover) told they wouldn't full lift trailar & boat unless towing car broke down (this was full package joint personal cover for me & Nelly) Had to pay recovery home £300 & kicked up hell, they checked recording & even though policy stated differeny they agreed I had asked for said cover. They eventually paid back this years (one month) & last years payments & with persuasion recovery fee. Went to green flag & cheaper price including dead trailer. Going to ombdusman for previous years payments that I was also miss-sold. I also had a ruined holiday due to their incompetence & megga stress
itchy trigger
I normally just have breakdown cover with my insurance, but just having just bought a 2006 shogun wanted a comprehensive cover, home start, car taken to where I wish ect, so looked at green flag on the internet, worked out if I took the recovery plus cover out on my 63 plate estate, then added personal cover to cover the shogun and any other car I was travelling in, I got change out of £80, I think that is excellent value
