We either look to pay more which will mean more tax and higher costs, we manage without or we make exceptions to the immigration rules for key workers. It doesnt have to be one or the other, it could be a combination of ways and means to get the migrant labour we WANT, not just have to take in everyone we HAVE to. We could also make the benefits system less attractive by small increments, stop this barmy mentality of families being better off working 16 hrs a week, and being topped up with benefits. I know people who would like to work more hours, but would actually be worse off financially if they went from part time to full time, thats just stupid ! Lets have a serious look at how we can train the people who already live in the UK, there are plenty of people out there for it. Too many kids leaving school with no real prospects of proper employment. And yes, in the meantime , make exceptions for immigrants who have sort after skills, it works, and has worked well in other developed countries for decades. The benefits system has just been re visited (I thought IDS was a good choice to do it) so I can't see that happening any time soon. The new start, fresh rule will be that we can choose which workers we want for what areas of work. I can imagine the english test will not be too taxing but I hope that we can have a system of work only visa's, time limited that do not allow residency unless you have children here? Hearing the stuff on the climate change agenda this morning maybe it's time to look at a new way of working. Let's have a constitution with a bill of rights that sets out a series of operating rules which will set out the operating parameters of state regardless of which party is in power.
