There is anyway currently a "call for evidence" in place regarding possible new legislation on crossbows.......

well the correct government is now in place to implement ANY NUMBER of legislation changes regarding bows/crossbows and firearms in general.

tbh though,i have never understood that in order to own an airgun over 12 FPE you require an FAC coupled with a good reason to possess  and somewhere to legally shoot it BUT you can just buy a bow/crossbow with more power than a .22 bullet gun with no checks or licence.🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Bloody horrific, read they were tied up and shot? People like that theres no point trying to arrest, just shoot on sight. Incoming kneejerk reaction and crossbow ban/upgraded to a firearm?

If it is true that they were tied up first, legislation against crossbows wouldn't have protected them  -  a person who has been tied up could be killed just as  easily by stabbing with a nail file, or being hit over the head with a wine bottle or frying pan.

that is truly ..truly awful

this is what the death penalty should be for...

This.

For those that say the death penalty is no deterrent, who cares? In situations like this the murderer will never be "reformed", this wasn't a crime committed on impulse.

How are you supposed to cut the anus out of a deer without a pointed knife? It would take a couple of minutes to put a point on a knife with a grinder.

I'm not sure what to think anymore. I'm not a gun nut and probably fall to the left of most of the hunting community here in New Zealand, but where does the erosion of personal freedoms in the pursuit of public safety end?

The backlash from this could have far more consequences than we realise. Already BBC newsreaders are pushing for results, quoting that a 'powerful' crossbow can be bought off the Internet, with next day delivery, to anyone who states they are over 18, without any proof of age  ?? I don't know how that is relevant, as the suspected Offender in this case is well over 18. Of course all the usual bans are being called for and 'tighter controls' are being promised, no doubt firearms will be included within that, given the opportunity. It is ironic that this incident took place on a day when a drunk/drugged driver was sentenced to 17 years (around 8 years realistically), for killing 2 people whilst driving at 141mph. I don't recall seeing or hearing anyone screaming for the motor vehicle to be banned. I do not see kitchen knives being banned anytime soon, and there have been far more stabbings than crossbow incidents. But, of course banning the sale and possible ownership of crossbows is a relatively easy thing to implement, as opposed to dealing with the knife crime epidemic.

Firstly, condolences to the family involved.

Secondly, I wonder what legitimate use there is for a crossbow?  Is there a sport involved around crossbows like archery?  It's a serious question as I don't know of any, but it may have passed me by.

Whilst I can't argue with @Westley post above, there is a difference in both cars and kitchen knives because whilst both are capable of taking lives when misused, both also are 'necessary' in our lives and of course remain available (albeit within a legal framework around supply (knives) and usage (car on public roads).

I am (as one would expect on this forum!) fully supportive of people holding shotguns, firearms as now licensed for legitimate target, vermin control and sporting usage.  I would also support being allowed access to a wider range of firearms that have a legitimate usage (e.g. target sports) such as handguns (even though I never owned any when it was legal).  Similarly - I would not wish to restrict archery as a target sport, but I remain to be convinced 'crossbows' have a 'legitimate' sport usage?

Yep.

An awful happening for sure.

No doubt a knee jerk coming. The perpetrator can't have been right in the head? Just need to look at the numbers of ex military people in need of treatment?

My gut reaction is the same, but what I've come to realise is that "legitimate" is very subjective. The legitimacy of lots of types of shooting and other activities could be questioned. Maybe the answer is just that it's fun and people want to do it. The anti-gun lobby (or in this instance the anti-everything lobby) will never be satisfied or meet in any sensible middle ground. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.

Crossbows can be used here to hunt wild animals, so is that legitimacy? Of course, you can't do that in the UK (or much else it seems), so the legitimacy is gone. Take away a reason to own something and you have no justification for owning it. It's a battle on two fronts and death by a thousand cuts.

Are you suggesting that the only reason people have a crossbow is for illegitimate use? If not then you have answered your own question.

I would hazard a guess that more people have been assaulted/killed by golf clubs but we don't hear a call for them to be licensed/banned.
