I'm not really a grumpy old **** but I well remember getting to school early on icy days so we could build a huge slide then get about 10 of us to go down it together. These days they shut the school in case little Mohammed slips and hurts bumps his knee.

When I worked as caretaker at our local school they would close the school at the slightest hint of bad weather - the vast majority of teachers lived within walking distance. But I will never forget the big poster on the wall in the staffroom that said "pray for a snow day". Pretty sure kids are no longer waterproof, bit of drizzle and they were coming by car from less than 400 yards away.

One of the daughters is a lead nurse in a large main hospital and I was speak with her at the weekend and she said.... DO NOT FALL ILL or have an ACCIDENT over the CHRISTMAS PERIOD.   She said that A&E was like a war zone and that they were minus 83.ĺ! This meaning that 83 patients were parked on trollies in the corridors.  That's not a bed on a ward. She said that there had been an influx of covid cases and  pneumonia.   The oldies were taking a beating and going down like flies.

Did you tell her that the lads on pigeon watch reckon they have plenty of cash and resources?

Apparently they need to stop making TikTok videos and be more productive … if they did we supposedly would have more than enough resources.

(I do hope you can sense my sarcasm!!).

I see Wes Streeting has urged pensioners to "Put the heating on" - despite his Gov't having removed the funding from many of them to enable them to pay for it!

Maybe an indication of the relative mindset they have?

I can just about understand their mantra and intent of trying to impoverished the wealthy? Ignoring of course their own financial standings,  but to try to impoverish the poorer in society is beyond my comprehension?

That seems really nasty and not easily forgotten?

If you look at previous threads talking about the NHS / public services it’s often stated (by many in this forum at least) that they aren’t under funded, and as such are not under resourced etc, and it’s all down to bad management.

Many suggest going back to matrons running wards / hospitals would somehow cure the whole thing.

No account for the funding per 100,000 head of population being cut.

No account for the significant advancements in medicine in this day and age (which obviously costs a lot more than historically when a “nurse” would mainly keep you fed and watered and see if you died or not).

Etc, etc, etc.

Lloyd old chap. Look at literally *any* other developed nation, see how much  they spend per head on healthcare, and see how much better they are than us at not killing their population prematurely.

The “envy of the world’ is in fact an absolute cluster of inefficiency & waste. There is plenty of money, if only it could be spent on actual patient care.

I totally agree, there is plenty of money going into the nhs but a large amount of it is being wasted, might be a start to actually get the staff into the hospital, I have a very close relative who works for the nhs and she said at any one time 3 out of 8 staff are off with pretend ailments and the usual excuse of stress. Even the consultants will decide last minute that because the weather is looking good that they are taking next week off and can she cancel the appointments and rebook them.

She is in an office of 8 girls and they are run by 5 managers. ( don’t forget that’s 5 girls really because the other 3 are off being ill)

Yes the nhs is broken in a great deal of areas due to a lot of lazy **** who couldn’t care less. I have more respect for people on the dole that tell you that they have no intention of working, at least they are not putting people’s lives at risk.
It must be completely demoralising for the front line grafters of the nhs, ie nurses, doctors, and some consultants and the many clerical hard working staff to see the lazy people swinging the lead in the back ground and getting away with it because the system allows it.

If they fine combed the nhs and got rid of the dead beats and managers that are not required, then I think they would have a lot of  additional money they need to supply a better service. But that is never going to happen because the dead beats and surplus managers know the system and how to play it.

I often wonder what sort of private health policy I could have if I was to invest the equivalent of what I pay to the nhs each month via my national insurance contributions. I suspect a really good one.

Its a complete restructure required and that will take between 30-40 years and that’s if we can find the right person with a backbone to head the changes.

But I also agree that quite a few nhs staff at the lower end of the food chain are under paid for the work and commitment they give and endure.

We have to remember that it is now a totally different NHS animal to the one that Aneurin Bevan envisaged.

and the NHS still perform those little miracles everyday regardless of the lazy deadbeats.

This is exactly the story I get from many family members who are, or have been, in the health service.

It was. also my personal experience when I was hospitalised unexpectedly for a few days in 2020.  The 'follow up' actions that I was due to have as a result of my then illness - have still not happened and I'm now told that they won't as I have not had any recurrence of my original illness.

I thinks it’s the same across the entire country, there must be literally hundreds maybe thousands of them costing millions every week. Worrying.

It’s very worrying isn’t it John.

no good phoning them, as they are either off ill or on holiday. Or the secretary to your consultant has now left and we haven’t replaced them yet, god knows what the consultant is doing with no appointments due to no secretary.

Fortunately, 4 years on and I am fine, but it isn't reassuring when;

  • the consultant said I would be seen 'in weeks' to confirm cause of my illness which couldn't be done whilst I was still ill.
  • when I called about 8 weeks later - initially they claimed they had no record of me (despite me having my 'discharge notes', patient number etc).
  • then they referred me to another department - who would have my records - they did.
  • they confirmed I was on their waiting list, but not 'scheduled in' as yet
  • nothing further heard in several months
  • my GP then said that if I was fine (which I was and still am) - not to worry

Basically - it's a disorganised shambles.  The medical side I suspect is all fine, but the organisation and administration is a complete shambles.

I have to admit our local doctors surgery is brilliant, we can always get an appointment that day, all they ask is you call them at 8:30am to request an appointment. If you leave it until 10 ish then you probably won’t get an appointment for that day.

Your absolutely correct it’s the organisation and admin side that’s broken and causing issues at the coal face.

True enough but there's one huge issue that no one dares talk about which, simply put, is that if everyone in the country ate mostly healthy food, maintained a healthy weight along with some fresh air and a reasonable amount of exercise, the NHS would be half the size it is and less than half as greedy for cash.

Just saying...

i tell you what makes me really wee'd off ...and that is folk saying ..."ohhh im not well today im having a day off work cause ive got flu"........people think because they have a sniffle and a headache ...they have the flu.....

i had flu ....thee proper flu when i was 19..and nearly died as a result....i was bedridden for 2 weeks...and i was very strong and fit.....i have been thro a lot in my life and i can quite honestly say i have never felt as ill....the closest i have felt to that was when i had a repeat vaccine for yellow fever and had a exreme reaction to it...but that was only over 6 hours...

proper flu is something i would not wish on anyone

Very true, killed my old man at the ripe old age of 66. Going to the hospital everyday and watch him struggling to breathe and end up on a ventilator before there was no coming back will stay with me forever. Really ****** me off when eligible people don’t get their flu jab because “they’re healthy”.

I think they would quickly change their mind if the NHS disqualified them from having a bed over someone who had gone to the trouble of obtaining the flue jab.

But then that would be a fair and logical way to assign a bed to someone. But it would quite possibly be against the human rights of the lazy sod who couldn’t be bothered.
