amateur Posted Sunday at 07:16 Report Share Posted Sunday at 07:16 There's been many a time that I'm grateful that we had daughters. 35 minutes ago, mel b3 said: I've always lived in fear of my kids being as reckless and stupid as I was as a young man. I bought my lads first car , so that he wouldn't buy anything stupidly fast ( 1.0l clio). When he got home from passing his test , I got him to take me shooting, so that he could do a good few miles on country lanes , and I could drum into him , that even with no road markings , you still have to drive on the left , or you'll probably just die in a head on collision , because nobody will be around to call an ambulance for you. I took him on a motorway, to get him used to driving on the inside lane , at 60mph , with hgvs . Your average lorry driver , is much safer to be around than your average car driver . I made sure that he had a clear understanding of the way things work. If myself, or anyone else I know, sees him driving at more than 30mph , it's an automatic 12 months driving ban. If myself, or anyone else I know, sees him driving with a car full of mates , it's an automatic 12 months driving ban. If myself, or anyone else I know , hears him driving with the stereo so loud that it distracts him from driving , it's an automatic 12 months driving ban. His mobile phone goes in the glove box while he's driving , and if myself , or anyone else I know, sees him using it while he's driving , I'll ram it up his xxxx so xxxxxxx hard it'll knock his back teeth out , and he'll get an automatic 12 months driving ban. If myself, or anyone else I know , ever sees him drinking and driving , he'll get an automatic life time driving ban , and I'll drag him to the police station myself. Yes I might have taken a bit of fun out of his early driving , but it was my job as his dad to teach him car safety , in just the same way that he was taught , to swim , to cross a road safely , and to handle a gun safely. 22 minutes ago, TIGHTCHOKE said: Well done Mel, I've done similar with my two boys. Westley Posted Sunday at 09:15 Report Share Posted Sunday at 09:15 (edited) I know of at least 2 lots of 'Parents' ? who have taken points on THEIR licence, to keep little darlings on the road. Make it easier to lose their licence AND harder to get it back ? Edited Sunday at 09:17 by Westley

It's not really because they're stupid , it's just that not fully formed brain thing. I remember someone saying that young men should be kept locked up until they're 25 years old 😄. 19 minutes ago, Dougy said: Restrict the HP or cc of cars for new drivers similar to motor bikes. I agree with that . Just until they've got more experience. They'd still get into trouble , but do much less damage while doing it. Ive often thought that everyone should have six months riding a moped before being allowed behind the wheel. Two wheels teaches you common sense and road manners. 3 minutes ago, Westley said: I know of at least 2 lots of 'Parents' ? who have taken points on THEIR licence, to keep little darlings on the road. With my lad , the police catching him would be the least of his worries. My kids must have thought that I was a right horrible old xxxxxxx , but they're 29 and 31 now , both in stable relationships, and own their own homes. I can only hope that they understand why I was so tough on them at times .

Often thought about doing it but never got round to it, I did do an evasive driving course in the military many years ago which was very good , and riding the trike makes you very aware of other traffic, the same as on bike you are assesing every thing around you because inevitably someone won't see you and pull out. marsh man Posted Sunday at 12:23 Report Share Posted Sunday at 12:23 We had a lad the other week on our local roads who was steering the car with his knees while recording it on his phone , ended up another person laid to rest . Then a girl who was taking a photo of herself while driving , she went into the back of a parked car and the poor young women in the park car is now paralysed for life and need 24hr round the clock care , the car driver came away with hardly a scratch . Another young lad in the local paper was 20 odd times over the limit for whatever he was taking and as high as a kite . This is what you are up against day in and day out , there isn't any easy answer it is just a matter of luck if you are out on the roads daily and manage to get home in one piece . islandgun Posted Sunday at 12:23 Report Share Posted Sunday at 12:23 (edited) Girls may be be more intelligent and sensible but they still go out with boys, Its desperately sad for all involved, perhaps a probational period after passing the test or engine governing at 50 mph but then it could be argued that slow overtaking speed is just as dangerous, having said that Ive seen drivers of all ages that shouldn't be on the road Edited Sunday at 12:51 by islandgun

MM There are a few 'easy answers' though. Fit EVERY traffic light with both speed and red light camera's. More 'average speed' camera's on known high speed roads. Stiffer penalties for offenders. If you were to injure someone with your gun, you are likely lose your Certificate, PERMANENTLY. Flatten someone, or injure them with your car, and there is a good chance you will not even get a ban. Yet far more people are killed or severely injured by vehicles, every day. If you get caught over the limit on drugs or alcohol, then a permanent ban, because there is a high number of re offenders. I live near to what is described as an 'accident black spot'. There is at least 1 collision there EVERY day. There are a series of traffic lights where 2 motorways meet, coupled with 2 main A roads. I have counted on average at least 3, but often more, drivers jumping the red lights. The road safety idiots keep scratching their heads about how to make the junction safer. Less than a mile away there is another traffic light controlled junction, only strangers to the area jump those lights, they have both speed and red light camera's fitted. It is not really rocket science.........people will not break the law if they know they WILL be caught.
Dave-G Posted Sunday at 15:01 Report Share Posted Sunday at 15:01 And if a conviction comes from any offence caused the full cost of police and all recues services be met by the culprit like what police want from us, some of the most responsible people in the country. Yellow Bear Posted Sunday at 15:17 Report Share Posted Sunday at 15:17 Our nearest main road is the A632 between Matlock and Chesterfield which has a stretch starting/ending in a steep hill but relatively straight (was 60 now 50 limit)with a hamlet (40 limit) at the bottom of the hill, known locally as "flying mile". which has a fatality at least annually and serious prang monthly at least. Speed Indicator Devices at either end of the hamlet 40% of drivers speed 60+ with many recording over 80 and at least monthly a 120mph being recorded. DoT still maintain speed cameras, fixed or average, are not required or cannot be afforded.

If I had my way , the first offence would be a ten year ban( very liberal of me i know), and the second time would be a lifetime ban. If they were then stupid enough to drive again , they'd be going to prison for years at a time. Get as drunk or stoned as you want , but don't drive and risk the lives of other innocent people. It's unbelievably selfish and irresponsible. Going back to when my lad passed his test . We have a 24 hour rule in my house . No driving for 24 hours after drinking . I know that might sound over the top , but if you've been up late drinking , you might not be over the limit the next day , but you'll still be tired , and that's just as dangerous. I know I sound worse than a copper , but it's better than putting flowers on his grave every Saturday, or visiting him in prison. I grew up in a household where drink driving was normal (as it was in many households years ago). My old man and my grandad would drink 15 pints each on Sunday dinnertime, then load the kids into the cars , and go for a drive out in the country. It was accepted (but not acceptable)in those days , but it's certainly not acceptable in this day and age.

Houseplant Posted Monday at 08:05 Report Share Posted Monday at 08:05 On a related, but slightly different note. My Mrs was driving home last night in a thunderstorm, came round a bend on a very dark rural road and came across a dozen boys around 12 years old running down the road. She said one of them was wearing a black t-shirt and she didn't realise he was there until he was level with the driver door. Just Kiwi boys having fun in the rain, but very, very stupid.
