al4x
One of the quotes that surfaced is quite appropriate to the current time really, "My policies are based not on some economics theory, but on things I and millions like me were brought up with: an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay; live within your means; put by a nest egg for a rainy day; pay your bills on time; support the police." oscarsdad
Thatcher was a little bit before my time but I remember her sending the forces to the Falklands and standing up for Great Britain...on the flip side to this I remember my dad being away for weeks and weeks at the miners strike..( he was a mounted officer) I don't really know about the politics of all that but my old man told me she was a great leader and she saved the marines as they could of been disbanded before the Falklands war..my dad spent 9 years in the marines before the police...as said by others she was someone's mother, wife...I say RIP thatcher THE IRON LADY Totally agree bud as I know exactly what you mean, before my time but I can remember my dad being away in the same way (he was a mounted policeman too). She certainly taught the rest of the world that if you mess with Great Britain there will be consequences. No one since has had any balls.
Dead-Eyed Duck
I agree we should all be respectful of the dead, that said Personally I did not like or respect her as a person or a politician, the faulklands saved her floundering career, until ultimatly she was kicked out by her own party its easy to reminice especially with such weak PC politicians we have today, but lets not pretend she was better than her not so special achivments surgest. Yes she was strong but that was tainted by arogance & bad decission making, Hands up the 1st person that didn't make a mistake. Arrogance - compared to Tony Bliar she was an innocent. She 'inherited' a country that was a basket case, dominated by Unions - remember our friend 'Red Robbo' and his apetite for strikes at British Leyland? Ditto that spendid socialist chap Athur Scargill - he that held onto his Union flat for so long? The miners were just pawns in the game. Her predecessor Ted Heath was useless by any standards, and John Major who followed her - who? The only claim to fame that he had was bonking Edwina Currie. Maggie didn't get everything right (who does), but at least she showed clear leadership at a time that we needed it.
spanj
When Maggie was the PM, I thought she was a head case, drunk on power. With the passage of time, I think I was too blinkered to appreciate her. A strong leader, who was better than the sum of Cameron, Brown, Blair, Clegg and the rest. She wasn't some smarmy, image conscious, weaker than water, self seeker that we are plagued with at present. A that is a fact

It is the passing of a pretty great leader I am a Northerner but I think She was a fantastic Woman. I am not going to judge her on her political standing, but she had more balls than the current shower of useless ****. I understand WHY people hated her politically, It's sad in a way that She has passed away and my sympathy goes out to her Family. It's a shame Camamoron couldn't take a leaf out of Her book. The northerner bit was purely a tongue in cheek pop at all the ex miners who will be along having wished for this day for years. I actually think Cameron isn't doing a bad job considering he is shackled to the lib dems, the state the country was in when he took over and the global economy, the simple fact is he wouldn't get away with Maggies approach and lets face it what are his options sacking 50% of the public sector workforce? or something similarly drastic to keep the ship from sinking. 86inch
does that include food? KW The welfare state isn't there to provide a "lifestyle" its there to put a roof over peoples head and food in their mouths.... To those on benefits, I say, give up your fags, booze and Sky TV and there's your food bill + plenty more.... You can have them all back when you get a job. Mrs Thatcher was the best thing to happen to this country at the time, and we are all now benefitting from it in some way or other. Its just a shame the "other lot" has brought us down, yet again.... Sauer020
Can't believe some of the comments made on a lady dying that are on her - SHAME ON YOU! Regardless of your political position she was not evil - she did what she thought was right so to celebrate her death is sick and disrespectful. If the mods don't remove the posts that do this then it'll be a real shame in my opinion and drips the forum down a level. Sauer

Others will dissagree and hate her but i wish she was in charge now ! amen to that
CharlieT
The Lady turned the country around fanatically and gave Great Britain it " Great" back. Shame she got to see how things got undone. One of our best ever leaders, there will be little to say about the current crop of the last decade or so For once Kent, I am in total agreement with you. Canis
Of the 70 odd Prime ministers this country has had, the only two that match Barroness Thatcher for service to the country where Wellington and Churchill. She had the backbone to do what was right even when it was unpopular , did all she did in the service of the country, and didn't look to feather her own nest while doing it! She should get a state funeral !
