Danger-Mouse
Dont know but if that's your arm it looks huge :-( lol It`s not my arm, no way I`d let that land on me. I presume the camera angle makes it look much bigger than it actually is.

Alpha Mule
I stood in a wasp's bike in some woods when I was a kid. So I feel I have reasonable grounds to say: "SHOOT IT!!!!" Sitsinhedges: you are a bad man! I also had a 'huge' wasp in my motorbike helmet once. It left me a nice wee hole in my temple and an excruciating headache that lasted hours. norfolk dumpling
Looks like one of those European wasps - afew years back we had a lot here and they liked my white-walled cottage at night. We daren't leave a window open for a while as they would end up in the bedroom making a horrible noise. Killed quite a few. Sometimes there were up to a dozen outside on the walls waiting to give us grief.
rodp
Look on the bright side, at least they're big enough to pick off with an air rifle.

Les*1066
Is it a hornet of some description? It looks scary, whatever it is!

moondoggy
Send your photo to the National Bee Unit in Sand Hutton, near York. They will tell you what it is. They are always looking out for things like Asian Hornets which destroy our bee colonies. It's worth letting them take a look, just to make sure it's not one of their target species. kennett
Winnie, you sure it wasn't a wood wasp? They are bloody huge and have a 1/2" long "sting" actually an ovipositor. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&source=web&cd=&ved=0ahUKEwiOkJ-01IjLAhXHsxQKHZx2CbMQjhwIBQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uksafari.com%2Fwoodwasp.htm&psig=AFQjCNFyc3dqE8BIKtU7Ua7NceQyRqxH_A&ust=1456137327421720&rct=j

fortune
If that's not your arm, what is it? I wondered about that. What is a wasp bike? And >> what is a wee hole other than a toilet. Is it a hornet of some description? It looks scary, whatever it is! Hornets have orange colour not yellow. You have all been fooled!!! It is Sesia Apiformis. The hornet moth. Clever disguise though. MOTH!!! It had fooled me. Kill it anyway in case we're wrong. I'm allergic to wasp stings and blow up like a balloon. There was a hornets nest down in the wood a couple of years ago and a woman and her dogs got stung by them. She said that it was terrifying and really painful.
coldweld
Too hairy for a wasp or hornet, plus if you look at its head the eyes are not big enough for aforementioned,
