Friend of mine used to own one, made a VERY good living from it......

Hard work and long hours if you're starting from scratch but it's a cash business so you get your money back straight away, no waiting 30/60 days for bills to be paid,

Get your product/prices and location right and you can't lose.....

With all the healthy eating and no to consuming fat. I've noticed chippy's are not busy anymore. Far to much competition from burger joints and pizza and kebab shops.

Unless it was somewhere like Whitby where people flock to for fish and chips I wouldn't bother. Fella I worked with made his money from a chippy and sold up when the tax relief changed on potato chips wastage. He said the wastage you could claim made it worthwhile as who knows how many chips you get from a bag of potatoes.

.

You should see the one at the end of my street. It doesn`t open every night but when it does it`s always packed around 5pm. It`s just your basic chippy too, no kebabs or anything like that. For me it`s the best chippy in the area, the chips are really good and the fish, which is cooked to order, is always nice too.

To the op I`d say good quality produce sold at a reasonable price.

The Salt and Malt just opened (just over a year ago) the other side of the lake. £6.95 fish and chips the attached restaurant has a three week waiting list for weekends. Place is rammed. Quality product at a premium price. Staff are mostly students.

Buy a run down wreck where the owners have lost interest in it. preferably in an area where theres not much competition or where it is coasting.

Get the place refurbished to a high standard, produce good food with one or 2 specialities relevant to a chippy. Proce it at the level to attract customers and do whatever is needed to get noticed.

It will take lots of hours and hard work.

Never leave staff to run it while away as standards will drop amd money go missing from the till. (Guaranteed)

Once the books look good. Sell it ASAP, def before it starts to look tired again and interest in the new kid on the block effect starts to wear off .Take a break.

Look for another and repeat until you have enough to retire altogether.

Excellent advice. We have a few round our way and all the clean, well decorated ones are very busy, one with a sit down restaurant part is extremely busy despite a tired looking decor because they make up for it with good fish and chips.

The ones that seem to struggle a bit are invariably those that have seen better days and generally don't even look clean enough, amazing really how dense some business owners can be.

Use beef dripping rather than the usual rubbish vegetable oil. Far healthier at cooking temperatures. You will stand out from the others producing tasteless fish and chips.

We travel to Yorkshire, most weeks, for proper fish and chips. You can't get any decent ones our side of the Pennines.

Where do you go? I've not seen many places that use dripping. I want to try some.

There was a chippy that I used Walsall way that did chips in batter. Not fish batter but I think some weak mix so the chips came with an orangy colour and flakes of batter with them they were outstanding.

The chips from the shop in the Black Country Museum I think are cooked in lard and they are also at the top end of delicious.

There's a chippy local that does battered chips ........... ace :good:

Black Country museum chips are also good. The sad thing is I can remember going in their new chip shop (there's two now, one up the top and one over the bridge) when it was still trading up the road in Hall St, does that make me old :/

Try the lardy cake from the BCLM :good:

Is chippy local a brand? I only remember it as I was going out with a girl over that way and used to pass it on my way home. Not sure I could ever find it again. The first few times i bought them I did not know they were in batter just a funny colour but some of the best I have had anywhere.

In another life i did some of the funding for BCLM its an impressive attraction.
