When to report aggresive dogs

Went for a jog with my daughter (8 year old) on Sunday along a quite coast road near where we stay.

As we passed by a house, 2 dogs started barking and jumping up at the hedge, next minute a pair of Ridgebacks clear the gate and charge towards us in to the road barking and growling. The male approached my daughter with its hackles up and was within about a foot away from her face so I pulled her out the way and put myself between them ready to banjo it and optimistically shouted "clear off" :whistling: which luckily for me it did.

A woman appeared from behind the hedge shouting at us to stand still as both dogs circled round us still growling and barking. After about a minute or she managed to get a semblance of control and pulled the dogs back in to the house before apologising profusely.

Nobody was bitten, they were just noisy and the woman said sorry but I'm still in two minds whether its worth reporting it to the village bobby, they're powerful dogs that to me weren't under control and there's several holiday cottages nearby with families and kids that could pass by like we did.

Always a difficult one, especially if like me you are a dog lover.

But you have to think to yourself, what would be the outcome if it was just a child walking by, not having somebody like you to intervene?

If possible, my decision would be to talk to the local police and ask them to have serious words with the owners, and hopefully they will take more care and be more responsible in the future !!!

Report it.. I had my springer on a lead on beach a couple of weeks ago. The bylaws clearly state that on that section dogs must be on a lead. Next thing this husky type designer thing with blue eyes ran over and attacked my dog. I had to stop my Son from getting in the way. Fortunatly I managed to pull my dog away from it using the lead.

The owner never even said a word. In fact the attitude he gave from 50 yards away was "so what are you going to do about it" Pig ignorant xxxxxxx. We were going to report it, but it's difficult without any details.

With hindsight I should have taken a picture of the dog and owner.

A long time ago my ex neighbours had a german shepherd it hadnt been properly trained or socialised, they knew it was aggressive and lots of people locally knew the dog was aggressive. It tried to attack a few people and a couple of times it managed to nip people, no one reprted it. The owners didn't take the necessary precautions and it charged, knocked down and then bit an old man very badly. The whole thing could have been prevented if the dog/owner had been reported.

I love dogs too. Happy to report it straight away get the things put down.

Have them put down? It's the bloody owner that's at fault here not the dogs!

If they were controlled and enclosed properly things like this wouldn't happen, but sadly it does happen far to often.

Bloody irresponsible owners naff me right off, shouting stand still that tells a story on its own

Yes, destroyed before they seriously injure or kill a person or child, I can only imagine if the OP's child had panicked and run, a ridgeback would take chase.

Dangerous dogs? Balls to them, shoot them.

Deal with the owners afterwards.

If the owner is panicking and telling you not to move there is clearly an issue with the dogs.

This kind of thing scares me. Two dogs against you and a child? You might have had to pick up your little one up whilst the dogs attack you.

I've been in this situation. Doberman ran over. Woman was shouting stand still and he won't bite you? I was like, what the heck? Is she serious? Damn dog bit me on the rear end.

Went Pete Tong from there.

The owner is at fault for sure, but if you can't trust a dog, then it's lost in my opinion and there's only one thing to do.

Would agree even if the dogs had even knocked the child or OP over, fact remains this time they hadn't ,yes it needs addressing sooner rather than later,OP quoted he will drop into local bobby next time they passing, personally I would of gone straight away if I was the OP,

In no way am I having a pop at anyone, just my own view, doesn't make me right or wrong .

We all have a different take on this and many of us keep dogs, myself I have 2 labs,7ft high perimeter no way out unless we let them

Not aggressive in any way but they have many teeth which could result in an injury,a dog can turn at any point

A good friend of mine had to pull a knife on a dog that was hell bent on attacking his son and daughter, it was a cross bred gsd rom a farm that was roaming loose. He was lucky as he was sat fishing his son had the sense to try and keep the dog away with a landing net pole as the dog was circling them like a wolf. They were rescued by a family traveling the canal on a barge and they chased the dog off mob handed . My friend was bitten along his forearm

Going from some of the replies on here some of you don't deserve a dog, 2 dogs jump a fence growl at people no biting or anything to assume they would and you want them our down/ shot. I'm glad none of you live in my village or you would have shot every other dog in the village.

You say yourself no one was bitten the dogs were just noisy, so do we now put dogs down for barking and growling ***.

Mmmm, not quite - but well done for the input.

The worrying thing here is that the owner seemed freaked, and they hadn't jumped over to have a tummy tickle had they...

Ridgebacks are fairly stubborn in my eyes, high prey drive... if the OP's daughter had of ran, it could have ended in a lot worse than an apology from a embarrassed and in controlling owner.
