first time pigeon post

well i see all the posts in this section of people shooting 100's of pigeons and some poor people who could only manage to get out for a couple of hours so only managed to shoot 72, (poor ****) so iv never felt the urge to ridicule myself by posting 6-7 pigeons that iv shot on most occasions :lol:

i know a bad days shooting is better than a good day at work so i never moan and i know im fortunate to have a farm to shoot on, where i am there just arnt many pigeons about for some reason, some times iv sat there for 6-8 hours and moved about between, in the 10 years iv been going iv had maybe a couple of 30's and a hand full of 20's but most of the time its between 0-10 generally somewhere in between, but i still love it,

took myself off today on my own, got set up and ready for 2.15pm come 3pm i realised the magnet was putting them off so brought that in and put the flapper out, no luck with that as one of the wings kept blowing off and a few birds had shyed away from it,so now it was decoys only, and for once there few a few birds around, by this time i was an hour in and id shot 4 birds so it was already a good day, it was a case of nothing for 15 mins the a little flurry but i made the most of it and was hitting some good birds, lots were just out of range or just passing so they were left alone, had a couple of mad 5 mins where i was over run, coming in from all angles, had to pack up at 5.30pm as i had to be home, for me it was a brilliant day, 19 pigeons 1 crow some good shots and some poor misses, 40 shots were fired, with reloading, smoking, supping coffee and picking up badly fallen birds i was rushed off my feet, dont think i could handle a 100+ day :good::good::good:

I have the same problem with the birds. I used to think about numbers when I first started lamping rabbits, nowadays as long as a shoot a handful I'm just happy to be out in the field and out of the house. I apply the same rule to pigeons/crows with around 15 min over 3-4 hours and I'm happy (best day 40) It's 15 less after all and my farmer couldn't give two hoots whether I shoot or not.

Most of the land I shoot seems to be more corvids than pigeons anyway I maybe shoot 4 pigeons for every 15 corvids.

Anyway that's my excuse... and I'm sticking to it!!

A good honest post which mirrors my own trips out.

As said, it's not about numbers, it's all about getting out there and enjoying yourself and our wonderful countryside.

Well done and thanks for posting.

It has encouraged me to perhaps post future reports of my days in the field when I shoot far less than you did on that occasion.

That was an honest post and it represent the bags of the majority of pigeon shooters on PW , we tend to think that the people who are constantly posting big bags never get the small to medium bags that most of us get , believe you me , they do get them and it would be good if they posted small days as well as the bigger days, instead of only posting days that some of us can only dream about and for the others who wouldn't want to shoot that many even if the opportunity arises .

I agree with the above crow , rooks and jackdaws pest control are mostly what I shoot some days you can get 100 plus and others if they are decoy shy 30 is a good bag there are more small bags than large ones. For a small day I personally like to use a black powder gun be it a percussion muzzle loader or a flintlock.

I would love to read more posts like this. For me, pigeon shooting is about looking for that next 'big bag'. I realise that not everyone is the same and I also realise how lucky I am to live in a good pigeon area.

Well done, Viking. Please post more regularly!

Great post and well done. Exactly how it is around my way and it's classed as a bumper bag when you reach double figures of crows or pigeons as there's just not that many birds around and when there is a few about every man and his dog are chasing them so they see decoys and flair from a field away at times. Refreshing to know I'm not the only one who struggles.

Much the same here as Viking.

My shooting consists of saturdays when i have time, thats get to farm 9.30 scout area rolling recon, set up by 10.30,watch flight line in the far fields and occasional pigeon that is just to far away or certainly out of my range, then watch as they fly either side of my hide or just go behind, take rotary in/out,same for flappers, adjust pattern, then shoot the two charity pigeons that were kind enough to sacrifice themselves to the pattern, put shot pigeon in pattern, back to watching sky and home by 3.30.

Think i should call myself, skywatcher.

So far have been out 3 times this year and 4 times in last 2 years.
