Are these people really homeless?

I once commented to my Dr about homeless folk in Cambridge. His reply was a bit away from what I expected. He said that he used to be a GP in Cambridge and had dealt with the 'homeless' a lot. Apparently there are a great many empty hostel beds available in Cambridge every night. They are empty because you are not allowed drugs or alcohol inside. So it appears that sometimes homelessness is a personal choice.

You still don't get a house or jump the queue if you have a child/children, you take your place in the queue like everyone else, that is a fact. For the past five years the housing officer who speaks to the groups of young people we work with has said the same thing pregnancy/children do not get you a house or jump the queue, you start at the same place, the end of the queue.

That's the case across the country and not just Cambridge.

Why do these alleged 'homeless' with their begging bowls all have mobile phones, why do they all smoke, wear expensive trainers and why do they all have dogs?

Vic.

Yep, they all seem to smoke and drink and have the latest mobile phones.

The other Xmas I was buying some stocking fillers in Body Shop and a somewhat bedraggled young man street person in long RAF great coat came in and politely asked the sales lady if she would like  £ coins change. She said yes and he changed up £20 quids worth. I commented that it was a good mornings work to which she replied it was his 3rd visit that morning and it was only 11 O'clock! I never give money.

Yes, the front end of the queue.

I'm sorry but you are completely wrong, I personally know many, so called single mothers, because it seems the second they are housed the father miraculously re-appears and moves in (not that this is declared because the benefits would dry up), that have been housed as a priority, because they have a child. It may not be as easy as it was before but it definitely happened.

Everyone joins the queue granted, but not everyone joins it at the back.

Why is is it your experience of the world is the benchmark for everyone elses ?

Are you seriously saying that because a housing officer in your neck of the woods has TOLD them they wont get preferential treatment for having kids or being pregnant, means that they actually wont ?
When you fill forms out for benefits ect, one of the first things it asks is if you have any dependent children.
But youre saying a mother with 5 kids fleeing domestic abuse, will get put at the back of the queue ?

You are deluded.
Women with kids, or pregnant get pushed forward, as their needs are deemed more important, and rightly so.

The fact that some women choose this as a lifestyle path, so they dont have to work is irrelevant to the way its dealt with.
Even if you could physically prove they have taken this choice makes no difference, they need to be housed, and quicker than most.

For many years in London (I can only speak for London)  single parenthood was the ONLY way most young working class women could ever get a place of their own  They couldn't ever earn enough to rent or buy. So a free council flat, provided for them more or less on demand in those days, and a life on benefits was the route of choice.

I rarely agree with Henry's point of view but I'm a bit concerned about the way he is sometimes treated on PW. I don't like his views but if I was in his shoes, I'd be feeling well and truly pixxxd off by now, to the extent of leaving PW. We need to understand the point of view of others, even if we don't agree with them.

That's a very fair point Weston, I'll leave those images there for context, but please respect others.

FWIW, my (limited) experience of this is different to HD. Although, I personally think it is right that pregnant women, or those with young kids get preferential treatment. However, there is some fraud that goes on, and that is a terrible abuse of the system.

Theres expressing your point of view , and then theres telling everyone they dont know what theyre talking about in a condescending, morally superior manner, on a regular basis.

I have no problem with anyone expressing their views, but if it is a rude, bordering on insulting unsubstantiated, contrary response to someone else view, then expect someone to challenge it in the same manner!

Some on here are deliberately rude and personal whilst being contrary, one assumes, in order to provoke a response........these people appear to have certain "issues" which manifest themselves as having "keyboard warrior" syndrome! Lol!

Not really! If you read the response given to my posting!

My cynical side, which can be a bit prevalent says, this only one potential scam from dozens, none of which the authorities seem to give a monkeys about closing down> Much more restful for them to ignore problems and just penalise the rest to compensate.

It's not the end result these days, just the way the game is played that matters.

Yep! Just see it escalate if/when Jezza gets into no 10!.......handing out cash, social housing and benefits to workshy, feckless, dishonest parasites, earns support, and more importantly to them, votes for the Labour Party!.......

These disgusting parasites are stealing the social care and benefits of the real needy in our society..........but the authorities don't care, it's easier to deny the honest, deserving cases an entitlement, than root out the dishonest undeserving parasites!

They will always take the path of least resistance.

From Shelter...

https://scotland.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/advice_topics/families_and_households/housing_rights_while_pregnant

The important points

  • If you are pregnant and you have no accommodation, you can make a homelessness application to your local council.
  • If you're pregnant and homeless, you should not be placed in a bed and breakfast unless, you are homeless because of an emergency or you have asked to be in an area where there is no other temporary accommodation.
  • If you are being evicted, your landlord can not just make you leave, they have to follow the correct procedure.
  • It is important to inform the housing benefit department of any changes in your circumstances. This includes the birth of your child, as the amount you are entitled to may change.

A once saw an episode of something like location, location.

A still young ish woman (about late 30’s) had been given a council flat about 20 years ago in London. Eventually she bought it with the right to buy at a reduced rate and it was now worth almost £1M.

She then sold up and bought a big place out of the city.

Good thing she got knocked up eh!
