Burnley Dave is / was such a legend that it seems churlish to restrict his name to an annual event. Posts of special merit could be considered for an ad hoc award.

Tightchoke - I have to reserve judgement - Burnley Dave was a true legend and clangerman has some way to go, although he is making stellar progress.😄

Was he the one with spare doors in his cellar so when he kicked the ones in house through he just swapped them..or was that 704 yd hare....some beauty's on here ....

Edit sorry... a more practical 704 yards now 😉

There have been a lot of white slaves, pressed sailors on Royal Naval ships, agricultural workers, even on the plantations where the black slaves worked there were the rednecks, Irish and Scots mostly, who weren't paid but worked for bed and board because they had no option, take it or starve.

Poverty was as much a form of slavery as any other, it wasn't so cushy being white

Now it’s getting complicated don’t worry I’ll knock down the stone walls that were built on the backs of Labour paid in potatoes

oh and best tear up the railways and fill in the canal built by starving white folk

im just looking for my degree and going to take it back

as the university I graduated from received massive donations from wealthy people 400 years ago  that amassed there wealth with slavery and piracy 🏴‍☠️

Now here’s another quandary if we’re allowed loaders in the coming season do I insist upon a person of colour  to avoid looking racist  or do I just have the one that makes me look smartly dressed and tall

The prize for most stupid post has a new genuine contender. I never lost faith in clangerman's ability to top his other entries and see off a late challenge. At this rate the Burnley Dave Award can only be heading in one direction. Get ready to take possession of a couple of broken doors of your choice.

now i’m back care to explain this?

Can you define poverty in the UK?

Sadly yes.

The Policy and Social Exclusion surveys (1983-2011) were used to define a definition of poverty based upon necessities rather than relative wealth. 100,000 children in the UK go without 3 meals a day and do not have a winter coat.  Source: https://cpag.org.uk/child-poverty/measuring-poverty

My wife teaches in one of the poorest wards in the country, my mother used to teach in another. They often buy children food out of their own pockets. It is hard to imagine the poverty. According to the Liverpool Echo their are areas of the city where women sell themselves for £4 a turn. I live less than an hour away but it may as well be another world 😔

Quite agree, but what should happen now is the video footage used to identify all the people causing criminal damage and being prosecuted.

Agree, they need to be traced and prosecuted to the fullest force of the law. Not only was it criminal damage but it was a listed monument.

I was effectively accused of being a right wing racist today. Because of my views on the BLM protests. I had to laugh, 50% of people think I am racist right wing toff, whilst the other 50% think I’m a socialist militant multiculturalist scrounger. And some people say that political debate in the UK has become too polarised.

How about picking one of these instead; Justin Howell, Sean Monterrosa, Jamel Floyd, Jamar Clark, Philando Castile, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor or even Ahmaud Arbery?

I was discussing this today, the BLM cause would seem much more valid if they had rallied around the deaths of one of the many earlier victims as the catalyst to protest rather than a drug addled ex-con. Same as Mark Duggan in the UK. I support the movement, but not the man. I support peaceful protest, but not destruction of property or violence.

This guy who died would still have been alive today ( doing what he has done for year, being a criminal) if he had been a well behaved American citizen.

What more can you say.

Please stop telling the truth , it makes you a racist 😠😅😅😅

Its sad for his family but a blessing for all the decent humans that have been on the receiving end of this bullies criminal antics.

Because he took part in a violent home invasion, holding a pregnant woman at gun point.

To put it in terms for a child, he was a bad man. It is sad that he has died, no one should be killed by the police. The police officer was also a bad man.

Fun fact about slavery.  If I remember the details from school correctly. The first slave owner in America was a Black Man.  All blacks (and whites where brought in as indentured servants). They would work for so many years to pay off their passage and boarding.  Mr Johnson sued the state of Virginia because he had bought his servant as a slave from Africa  and should not have to release him.  In 1654 the court agreed that he did not have a contract release him and he was in fact property.

Priti Patel was great again today, despite effectively being accused of being a racist 🙈

I saw that on the news, imagine telling her she doesn't understand racism,  her retort was perfect.

Why can't you put that some people are better off dead, that way they can't hurt other people anymore.

GF didn't deserve to die being knelt on, he should have been rotting in jail. Given the list of previous convictions I don't understand how he wasn't locked up.

Actually the navvies (as they were called) who built the canals and later the railways were working class royalty although that came at a price. Their work rate was nothing short of super human, the companies wanted to get the job done and each man was expected to do the work of two men and records were kept to ensure they did..

For their day they received very good food and sixteen pints of beer a day. They were only paid cash  at the end of each run, called a randy (run day) and "randy" women would decend on the navvie camps to relieve them of their pay.

Living hard, working hard, drinking hard and playing hard the camaraderie and the bond between the men must have been immense,

Very true and good post

tbh I was trying to lighten it up a bit 👍

there’s some amazing feats of engineering around the country that have been created around the country and the world done by men with shovels

One of my favourites is cresswell crags out of work men paid to dig a gap in a hill and barrow it to the top to make it 100 feet high to drive the pheasants over

all to give dignity to the unemployed 😊
