Uk response so far (and EU)

The WHO have just announced that they will relook at the UK's approach of giving only one dose first as it "appears to have worked for us". So, despite all the criticism of Boris and with the UK appearing to have used our new found ability to be agile outside of a floundering EU and what appears to be another uk success, what's peoples thoughts? Does anyone still feel we'd be better off in the EU?

I would have thought that it's a bit early to say that it has worked for us? Even the manufacturers of the vaccine seem to say that 3 months between doses is not good. I cannot help but think that half as many people taking the full dose is better than twice the people taking half a dose. Early days yet so .....

Well that depends on the level of protection from the 1st dose. I'd rather have everyone getting 60-70% protection than half the population getting 80-90% because there's data coming out that the 1st dose not only makes the illness less destructive but also reduces the reduces transmission. And in the last analysis that's the only way we can get out this Covid fertiliser as throwing the entire economy under the bus to "Save the NHS" doesn't solve anything.

They are doing a great job. 👍 unlike the EU. The UK as with all EU member states had the option to join the EU joint purchasing scheme for vacinne. Definitely a sound decision not to.

I am hoping that they can keep increasing the numbers as the second doses will be due soon.

Could you please give us a link for  WHO saying the "one dose approach" worked?

I have the impression this is fake news but happy to be corrected.

UK would have been able to act exactly the same way being in the EU, but probably this does not suit the anti-EU propaganda. Hopefully Brexit will bring some real benefit at some point.

That said, Boris is doing a good job and I hope 1 dose gives enough protection.

Interesting perspective, I was under the impression if we'd signed up to the EU scheme, the vaccine would have been centrally sourced and divided up equally (except Germany and France would probably get the lions share of course). But perhaps that's not the case?

Completely agreed. On another note I'm sure if the virus came out of the lab in China either accidentally or on purpose the WHO wont be telling us anytime soon.

Fair play, never thought I'd hear you say that 👍

Here's one from one of the vaccine producers bosses.

I'm still searching for the statement by WHO, I'll post it when I find it.

I don't think we could have acted in the same way as their delay was caused by a central negotiation for the 27 states. This delayed their purchase by 3 months at least. Hence they are so far behind the UK and the criticism they have received from their own members. Even whats her name recently compared the uk as an agile speed boat and her beloved eu as a lumbering tanker.

I heard on radio 4 that there was evidence to suggest the longer the gap the better the protection provided. Something to do with the memory of your immune system being refreshed and a longer wait refreshed more of it. They all seemed to think 12 to 21 week wait wouldn't make a lot of difference at all. As they were all experts in viruses ill take their word for it.

This is really interesting. Thanks for sharing. Not sure if results from any study are already available but this is good news and very promising.

As for the vaccination strategy, any nation (in EU) could have approved and ordered the vaccine independently, as UK did.

Cheers

I was being sarcastic as usual with 'the horror' bit , apparently British medics/scientists are cool with Sputnik V , and awarded it good scores in the coronavaccine sweepstakes

Strange how some governments change their tune when it comes to such things.

I think Sputnik is a strange name to give a vaccine but like you say it seems to do the job.

However of they called it the LADA vaccine I would not go near the stuff
