It appears he has been asked to tone it down, but has refused. They might have happy to cave in with a promise of good behaviour from now on, but Lineker has refused.

He has forced them to be braver than they thought possible. He has forced their hand and he has to go.

This /\.

It is reported he has been asked to come to agreement about what he says publicly including on means other than the BBC.  This is the same as applies to other 'high profile' BBC personalities.  He is simply being asked to behave in a way that fits the impartiality of the BBC charter.  It is not unreasonable for an employer to expect people working for them to have to follow their rules.

It is his choice;

  • He can choose to continue to publicly express his personal views - in which case - he will not meet the BBC's rules and will need to leave the BBC.
  • He can accept that he needs to keep his personal views to himself - in which case it seems the BBC will retain his services.

Its on itv, i just wonder wether all sports presenters will start wearing inane little coloured ribbons etc,

They usually do for anything that will help boost their ego's

Edit, their will be bbc presenters, 'six nations sin bin' pre match on 1,the last time i watched programme though, i turned it off as it was more like a rugby g@y fest

Well it now looks like all/most BBC football programmes will contain a desk and empty chairs !!! Will all these presenters join up and create their own sports TV channel ?! 🤔🤭🤣

Those pundits are playing a very dangerous game. They are at best replaceable, nobody would miss them, I for one would be glad to be rid of some of them.

The world of TV is littered with victims of their own ego who overplayed their hand thinking they were untouchable.

Is he not entitled to he’s own political views even if you don’t agree with them. I would understand he was voicing he’s opinion on match of the day.

I am not trying to be controversial I just believe if freedom of speech.

I also believe in freedom of speech and to be able express your views, however you must also be ready for the consequences of your actions.

This has nothing to do with linekar and all to do with the heavy hand of a right wing regime in power.

He works for the BBC.  He is subject to their code of conduct which he must follow.  End of story.  The BBC have asked him to stand down until he accepts that.

This affair flags in so many issues that it’s hard to see the wood for the trees.

My main issue is the lazy comparison to the holocaust.  I’d clip his lugs for that alone.

That the BBC always offer balance and avoids appearing politically biased is well known.

Too much licence fee money is thrown away on salaries for sports pundits, especially footballers. We can’t afford it and most don’t want it.

Whilst they didn’t pick the time or issue, this is a golden opportunity to introduce some radical changes to sports coverage.

Sack off the football pundits who strike and start again with a fresh, younger crop. New t&cs, lower wage bill, no real change to the coverage.

There’s plenty of ex-footballers who’d be happy for the gig. Sky cleared out a load for various reasons and frankly, who can tell the difference?

Same again today,

Gabby logan, gareth thomas jason byrne, anton du beke and ellie simmons poncing about and talking about which players may be the best dancers ***,

More like eurovision than the 6 nations,

These are the sort of inane low grade presenters and shows we will end up with if presenters with opinions of their own and respect within their field are banned from the media,

He is a contractor. Contracted to talk about sport. There are 100's of thousands of contractors are they to be gagged? Are they denied an opinion?

If he was an employee, if he were a journalist then yes I could understand it.

Rubbish. Anybody who thinks the BBC is a right wing anything is off with the fairies

It's run by a right wing Tory supporter.

He is not denied an opinion and nor are any other employees or contractors - but whilst he is still 'working' for the BBC - even if as a contractor,  he is still seen by the public as a "BBC presenter" - so he must rightly follow the BBC guidelines - which do not allow him to express publicly any opinions that might impinge on the BBC's public role as an impartial broadcaster.  If he leaves the BBC (which hew is free to do) he can talk about any of his own opinions.  That is a decision for him since the BBC has (apparently) said that he can stay on if he follows their guidelines.

Any business with a decent management will ensure that any person who comes in (even as a contractor) in support of the business upholds the business's guidelines in respect of the role he is fulfilling.  His role is as a public facing presenter of a programme on behalf of the BBC.  In effect - a public face of the BBC as a corporation, which has a charter that includes impartiality.  It isn't the current government or the BBC chairman, DG or management who specify that - it is in the charter and the management have to operate within that.

In such a public facing role he MUST ensure that the terms of the BBC's charter are met (by following the guidelines laid down by the DG and management) - because the BBC management have a duty to ensure that they comply with the BBC's charter.

And staffed by journos  that vary from left socialists to full blown commies.  You are just upset by the fact that  it is now no longer a socialist woke mouth piece from the very top down.  At least this is a sign that it may be swinging slightly towards impartiality.

😂 Oh pleeeeaaase!

It has nothing to do with boat people either, but everything to do with an agenda against a Tory government.
You just have to look at who is supporting his comments to see that.
