Ultrastu
Don't get one . You will be forever locked into that company and they have all the control .
Good shot?
I do not intend to have a smart meter fitted. However we all eventually have to have one or face having to pay even more for our energy usage as a result of not volunteering to have one When we all have one fitted they will then once again charge use what they wish to along with other controls. We can only delay the inevitable as we will not be able to stop it.😇

Total rubbish you can change suppliers just the same as before , I have said before on here as the meter doesn't belong to you at some point the energy company will change the meters. I can see when people buy a new house and need to enrol with an energy company they will insist on smart meters being fitted it's just a matter of when not if. Ultrastu
And why do you think that is .? Why the insistance ? Have you tried moving energy suppliers while having a dumb meter ?
B725
I have changed supplier with a dumb meter and a smart meter, the bottom line is unfortunately to save the cost of reading meters and maximum profit for the supplier.
TIGHTCHOKE
What exactly do you fear from a Smart Meter? I have one, I only pay for whatever gas or electricity I use. I never over pay. In the OLD days, when you gave your own meter readings or even further back a chap knocked the door. Then if you were out or couldn't be bothered the company imposed an "ESTIMATED" reading. You can change suppliers at any point depending upon what you have agreed in your contract with the supplier. I bet you old boys still believe it is better to build up a credit through the good weather! Get real, welcome to the 21st century. Go on, please enlighten me as to what you perceive the problems to be..................................
Agriv8
A colleague at work changed suppliers all went well until a mess up by one of there staff sent the remote turn off to her meter- not the person who had not payed the bill - took a good few hours to resolve! B725
I personally don't have a problem with smart meters but then again as I now have solar panels I have to or I couldn't benifit from them as I export energy as well as use it. It you had an old style dial meter, you would get the same rate for export as import which would be better than what you get with a SMART meter, whose sole purpose is to allow control by the electricity suppliers over price and connections. TIGHTCHOKE
Apparently so! I am a buyer of gas and electricity and presumably most people are, so quite what is so scary is beyond my comprehension.

With an ordinary meter its likely to move in your favour as it get older. Also as prices move you control the reading you give. The early ones are not so smart the second generation are apparently better in that they will allow two way (supplier led) control. Ultimately we will all want one it's simply a matter of time. JohnfromUK
I agreed to have smart meters (electricity and gas) about 18 months ago based on them being SMETS 2 (the more modern standard) ones. Man turned up for appointment and fitted electricity meter, but not gas meter. The electricity 'smart' meter works intermittently so I still have to send in readings manually monthly. Not a big issue. For the gas, apparently he wasn't qualified to work on the gas pipe and meter size (installation is about 6 years old) because it was a 'non domestic size' I had when fitted a gas AgA, 3 gas fires and a (large) gas boiler. It would have to be done by the utility company. They would have to arrange for them to visit. It should be no problem because the AgA has now been removed (it was too expensive to run and didn't meet current regulations). The utility company came - but couldn't do the work because they didn't have some paperwork giving some needed data. Would need to send someone else. 18 months on - I am getting nowhere. So I do have a (sometimes) working smart electricity which tells me nothing useful and I still have to send in readings. I am still waiting for the gas meter to be done - approaching 2 years into the process now. All bit of a shambles and must be costing them a fortune. EDIT: The gas meter has never been read by 'them' and I send in readings - and the statutory (every 2 years) checks have not been carried out. welsh1
Every month my phone reminds me 3 days before my bill to send in meter readings, it takes a couple of minutes on line, i have no need for a meter. my neighbour on the right had a meter, then tried to change suppliers and was told the meter wasn't compatible,so she has a nice ornament, my mate 4 doors up was billed £35,000 they apologised and said it was a glitch, the next month he got the same bill, he doesn't use it anymore. Why would you want something in your house that can switch your utilities off at the push of a button at the utility suppliers hq. it's not about helping you, it is about maximising their profits, once they can accuratly determine how much energy you use by the minute /hour/day, then you can be sure that billing will be changed to maximise their massive profits. discobob
I am of the opinion that anything with "Smart" in its name is just a way to control us - or actually isn't I served with 2 guys, both with the surname Smart - they weren't 😁
super sharp shooter
I had zero issues with my old meter that i had to enter manual readings every month. Now i have a smart(not so smart) meter my bills are all over the place Last month i had a bill for 7k for a 4 bed house. I told them this wasn't correct and now have a new bill for £500 hoe can it be so wrong if it's smart?
