As a blocking / static force it can be argued there is a place for numbers over training. you cannot replace the professional soldier on todays battlefield. the army is at the smallest since conceived but tactics and war fighting have evolved massively. We no longer form line and walk slowly with our red jackets on. everything has become more technical and streamlined. A communication network to cover the battlefield that took hours to set up and was massively manpower heavy can now be done by imbedded troops. The frontline repair of equipment in some cases is now hours of component pod swapping rather than days. There have been massive lessons learned in the use of drones and protection of infantry with the Ukraine acting as a proving ground. then we have the reserve element and then onto the regular reserve element who can be up skilled so much easier than the youth of the street. First sensible post on this thread. We got rid of conscription in the 50s because it became clear we needed a professional armed forces to operate and maintain complex equipment. It took the best part of the 18mths/2yrs they had just to train them up on the new cold-war era kit. Soon as they were vaguely trained, most departed for civvy life soon as they could, for better pay and conditions. It's absolute fantasy to think we could do the same again, and those who wish national service to be a giant youth training scheme are invariably 'boomers' who were never we part of it! Incidentally, an actual call up would involve all males 18-60, sorted by the last digit of your NI number, A most likely, D least likely.... I think more would join but they need to have better care. Years ago a bunch of squaddies came through Gatwick as soon as they got on the bus . Welcome back and this is your P45. No I was a civvy driver and to see there faces they had been S--t on made me feel sick, And it as only got worse come to England in a boat you get money a house driving lessons and treated with respect.
