Hello, Should have been a longer Sentence, Do we know how the chap is that he Assaulted ?? Has he any come back to claim damages against the MP ?

I didn’t think he would get ten mins but for something that could easily have been a one punch killing it’s far to light joe bloggs would have been given at least six mths or more likely twelve

So if I go out and punch someone and get 6 months, can I argue that he only got ten weeks??? Glad he has been charged but 10 weeks for assault .. seems pretty pointless a time frame

He'll only do 4 weeks. 

£200 compensation to pay. 

£85 costs its a joke. 

If he doesn't do the right thing and resign he'll also have access to phone email and wifi.

I’m no fan of Labour but this seems rather overblown. The kind of thing happens in every town centre at the weekend.

Will probably still get his £1800 a week wages while eating free food for 4 weeks maximum! Will probably claim expenses while there too! What’s the betting he will be released within days on appeal?

After speaking to a policeman officer friend..

 His sentence is harder than the average Joe 

If you had done that, you’d probably got a conditional discharge

Recall petition

Following sentencing, a Labour Party spokesperson said: "The Labour Party took swift action following Mike Amesbury's completely unacceptable actions and he is no longer a Labour MP or a member of the Labour Party.

"It is right that Mr Amesbury pleaded guilty and has now been sentenced.

"Local residents in the Runcorn and Helsby constituency deserved better and we look forward to them getting the representation they deserve in the future with a new Labour MP."

The jail sentence means voters in Amesbury's constituency can remove the independent MP from his seat with a recall petition.

This can be called if a sitting MP is convicted of an offence that leads to jail time, or even a suspended sentence.

More than 10% of voters must sign the petition in his Runcorn and Helsby constituency for a by-election to be triggered.

A recall petition would also be triggered if the House of Commons decided to suspend him for 10 sitting days or more.

Reform UK party chairman Zia Yusuf called for Amesbury to stand down so a by-election could be held.

He said: "The great people of Runcorn deserve far better than waiting six weeks for a recall petition to take place."

A further application for bail is expected to be heard at the crown court later this week.

I’m surprised it’s being treated as such an outrage. 2 drunken guys arguing, one punches the other in the face. Everyone on this forum has probably seen this exact scenario play out dozens of times in pubs up and down the country. Keep in mind that criminals possessing indecent images of children are usually spared jail, I think it puts into context that this punishment is unduly harsh.
