Just a friendly reminder to you all to keep your wits about you, especially if you are drunk as a skunk and wandering home of an evening. Just after 10pm last night I got attacked by two guys just yards from the house (in a 'nice' part of town, I hasten to add), dragged to the floor and very efficiently relieved of the iPhone, Blackberry and watch. :sad1:

The fuzz came along pretty swiftly to take swabs and a statement, and my suit jacket has gone off for forensics. Apparently there has been a spate of attacks with the same MO in the area, but I've got to be realistic about the chances of the culprits being caught.

Anyway, I'm unhurt, but my pride is pretty dented. I'm more concerned that it happened so close to the house, and although Lady Seagrave isn't in the habit of blundering around the streets of London as tight as an owl, I am worried for her.

Aside from the usual "hanging is too good for 'em" invective, has anyone got any top tips for avoiding this sort of thing?

LS

PS: Oh, and don't forget to back up all those photographs of your newborn baby and the first year of his life. Thanks a bunch you thieving scum.

If ever in London and it's late and I'm on my own and especially if slightly inebriated (which I do find myself being in this situation on occasion) - I always ensure I keep my iPhone away and not in a obvious place, I usually have no cash apart from a small amount on me and the rest is card. I also ensure I don't really walk in dark places without others around on my own and will usually get a cab.

What you need is to buy a crappy old cheap phone for being in pocket and a decoy wallet with a 5'er and old de-funct card in, then when on way home put good ones in more hidden area. My Brazillain friend does this and says he has done for years as what happened to you happens a whole bunch more where he is from and he now lives in London (he owns a large ship supplier in Brazil and Is very wealthy).

Same thing happened to a old colleague of mine, female, slender figure - the guy picked the wrong person though as she's a pro kick boxer and she give him a good kick about and then run.

So sorry to hear about your photo's though - always update to the cloud in the future (I did that after losing my old photo's last time)

Really sorry to hear about that! :(

I think its a total shame that people can carry out that sort of attack in public (even if it was late at night) and basically get away with it. And even if they do get caught they arent punished properly IMO..

Sadly I dont know what you can do to prevent it either! Carrying some sort of personal defence is a definite no-go; You'll either end up in trouble for having whatever it is, or even worse it ends up being used on you by your attacker.

The other argument I've heard is "well dont walk about with your iPhone and expensive watch on" but my response to that is "why should I curtail my lifestyle just so that some scumbag doesnt attack me?" Otherwise we might as well all just drive around in jalopey's with 150k on the clock, wear £2.99 casio digital watches and have a burner mobile that we bought in a petrol station. Whats the point?

Frankly I think about the only thing you can do is get taxis home rather than public transport as at least thats door to door, and maybe take a class in personal defence?

The issue with the personal defence class is its effectiveness is diminished if you dont practice (or if you've had a few drinks!), and sadly the way things are is if the police turn up to a fight they'll just nick everyone and sort it out later. And the criminals have nothing to lose! Whereas generally law abiding people have jobs, houses etc that they risk if they get into a scrap.

At least you were a good honest victim and did not give your attackers any trouble or do them any harm, as British law these days requires! God forbid that in defence you injured them, might have found yourself in a lot of trouble.

Wheres is a copper when you need one? Responding to even numbered house burglary calls I imagine!

If the only dents are to your ego they will bang out soon enough! Semper Virgilio, but hard if you're ****** :whistling:

It happens regrettably. You did ok though and you never got hurt, just shaken. There's nothing you can really do that's within the law and if you stray outside (pepper spray, teaser etc) there's a good chance of it being used on you.

Don't let it unduly affect you or your way of life.

Hiding your stuff probably is not the best idea, a very good friend of mine was walking home with a friend when they were mugged at knife point in the sunderland area not that long ago, my friend friend handed over some small change however my close friend had nothing to give of any value so they beat him up pretty good for good measure.

^ Jonny Thomas, your mate deserved an award and a pat on the back from the police; some will say its stupid but i'm of the opinion that once you show intent to break the law you have given up any protection the law offered you I bet your mate has lost all faith if he had not before. Our laws around self defence make it near enough risk free for criminals to attack individuals.

Sorry to hear this, it's a sad demonstration of today's society.

My only tip is to take a taxi home, even if it's just a 2 minute ride.

Totally agree that the only important thing is that you're ok, stuff is replaceable and photos, whilst horrible to have lost, I'm sure can be cobbled together from family and friends.

At the risk of sounding self-serving, get a cab, a huge number of my fares at night are folk who've had a few and just want to avoid the risks of being drunk and solitary on London's usually safe streets. On top of a comfortable and enjoyable ride, chatting to a professional raconteur, you also get the benefit of your driver being a 20 stone lump who takes it as a personal affront for his punters to be attacked. Have stopped a couple of robberies and 2 attempted rapes, one by having a brief but enlightening conversation with a knife wielding chap who met the famous Spanish archer - El Bow.

Glad you are OK, and the met might yet get them, undermanned and underfunded, they're still quite good at what they do.

Is there not an app that you can download that enables you to totally disable your phone via your laptop?

Yes there are a few.

The one I use is called Prey - search for Pretty Project. Unfortunately for the op, you have to install it pre-theft, but if you do have it installed, it hides in your phone, and if your phone goes missing, you log in to your account from another device, and mark it as MISSING.

The phone will then report its position regularly, and send photos of the user to the the Prey system for inclusion in the reports. You can also hard-lock the phone remotely, and paid for version allows you to remotely delete files, and even perform a factory reset, wiping all your data (you do have a backup, don't you?)

No connection, etc, just a satisfied user.

Sorry to hear that chap but it's only going to more frequent as many folk are getting poorer on a daily basis, the main thing is it's only your pride that got a bashing, I hope they catch the toe rags! What area of London was this in? It's even starting to happen round where I live which has always been a low crime area, as for Mrs Seagrave the best suggestion is a small pocket aerosol of something that makes women small nice like that "impulse" stuff, I would suggest keeping it handy and spraying liberally in the general direction of any would be muggers face so the police can identify them from the smell afterwards ................. That stuff is worse than pepper spray but there is no law against taking an interest in your personal hygiene

At least you're OK and got to home to your wife and son, these scumbags probably saw you'd had a few pop's and picked you as an easy target, unfortunately it's a sign of the times and as others have said its only going to get worse. Look on the bright side " what goes around, comes around! "
