People on this very forum for years said the winter fuel payment should be means tested.

People who are millionaires get it … I recall many on here saying they spent it on cartridges.

Can’t help but think of the Tories had brought it in some who are complaining would be saying what a sensible change.

It was probably the timing.

NHS workers get a mega rise, grinning idiot Ed Milliband boasting about billions being spent abroad, so the UK could have the moral lead in the Emperor's new clothes, that is net zero.

Then pensioners face cuts.

There is a vast difference  between means test and taking it of everyone. Maybe people who got the fuel allowance  used it on fuel heating. And because they did not have to pay the money out  of there own pocket that the government gave as an allowance for they decided to treat themselves to something they liked .

I don't honestly belive there was many on here agree it should be means tested and probably those that did, did not need it in the first  place.

The video highlights how two faced he is. While in opposition listen to these poor pensioners . Saying he is feeling sorry for them , none of us pensioners want money taken of us ,  was it not upto the new government  to look into it and do a means test . No let's just take it of everyone, to easy .seem it has backfired as it's not raising as much as they planned it would . Yet. We can give to these channels crosses who have never  paid into the system and are never likely to .

Inducements to continue voting Labour, so uncosted, of course.

As much as I dislike the boomer generation (that’s a different discussion)

it has to be said their unrelenting spending spree has kept  things afloat … cruise industry, garden centre etc etc

once they decide not to spend, things start to contract which has the usual knock on effect.

What a silly remark.

Sadly it does cost those of us south of Hadrian's wall £41 billion pounds a year with an extra 2.4 billion the last three fiscal years because of Covid etc. This money is sent under the Barnett agreement to all the nations.

That was always the problem but with Starmer being keen to re-establish Labour’s grip north of the border I can only see that getting worse. He is going to throw money at them.

Scotland is an economic wilderness. High unemployment and long term sickness.

The ship building has gone, the mining industry has collapsed. Their fishing industry was ruined by EU quotas and the distilleries sold off to foreign investors.

The oil industry is in rapid decline and Milliband has now pulled the plug on any future exploration.

Most of the land is not suitable for commercial agriculture. Too hilly and poor soil. The climate doesn't help. The hills used to be covered with sheep but not any more. The price of wool has collapsed and the increasing cost of feeding them through the long winter ihas made it impossible to show a profit.

So what does that leave for the future of Scotland? Well there is the tourism, but that's never going to be enough. Its also very localised to specific areas.

Last time I was up in Scotland all the staff in the hotel i was in were Eastern Europeans , yet there is high local unemployment?

Why get up at 5.30am to cook breakfasts in a hotel when you can stay in bed and live off Universal Credit? That says it all really.

I will be back up there Tuesday, Argyll and Bute. Let's see what it looks like then.
