The guys on it before actually came across as being friends, and the dialogue between them was natural rather than forced, this was all painfully obvious scripted stuff that they'd learned before the show, I'm sure they had a script before, but it wasn't obvious.

.

It was scripted before, mostly, if not all, written by Clarkson, IIRC he once laughingly complained that Top Gear had been put up for a best unscripted TV show award. The fact it came across that way is a testament to his skill and the natural rapport amongst the 3 amigos.

Anyone can do the format, that`s easy. It`s re-creating that magic between the hosts that`s the difficult part. That`s why the US and Aussie versions aren`t as popular as the old shows with Clarkson, May and Hammond.

Yeah, I agree with that, even the cheering from the audience grated, sounded like a 70s sitcom where they were all being held at gunpoint, or even worse, Saturday morning kids tv.

To be fair.. I think that May had said (before it was taken out of their hands it only had 1 or 2 years left in the format as anyway and were looking to bail on the near future anyway.

It's funny that Sitcom gas been mentioned. I read somewhere that the programme was more akin to a Sitcom as it had little to do with cars... I guess you couldn't do friends successfully with totally different characters/ actors either.

I don't remember there being the cohesion in the early Clarkson, Hammond May Top Gear shows. James May seemed desperately out of tune with the other two, especially Jezza. But they grew together and obviously became very good mates.

You may well be correct. I can`t really recall the earlier shows tbh.

Evans and LeBlanc may eventually gel into a cohesive unit and the show could improve. However, unlike when Clarkson brought the show back, they have far more public scrutiny and probably pressure to succeed.

having listened to Chris evans on R2 this morning all he could talk/boast about was his Top Gear viewing figures?!...his ego astounds..I do hope alot of people felt I'll see the New Top gear and give it a chance....and now turn off...a gloating Chris Evans is not something to wake up to..

To be fair I watched it and quite enjoyed it, some bits made me giggle especially the catering joke at the start lol...

Granted, Evans was trying to impersonate Clarkson for a bit of it but I thought for a first showing, it was good and hopefully they will all gel together in the future to make it as good as the original.

Only time will tell, but ill be watching other episodes certainly.

Chris Evans reminds me of a Cocker Spaniel on Red Bull, all yap and wriggle.

If he calmed down, tried to develop his own style instead of trying to do a Clarkson it may work. Le Blanc seemed to suffer a bit with the format and the script, but he seemed to get into the swing of things a bit better than Evans.

I thought the best line was when they were talking about the tame racing driver, "We got custody!"

Isn't the feeling that Evans is "copying" Clarkson just the result of him delivering lines written for him by the same team that supplied them for his predecessor?

A friend has always said that Top Gear is a sitcom made to look like a car documentary (and didn't intend it as a criticism), and that particularly rang true this episode, I thought.

I personally felt that everything felt a bit worn, tired and creaking. I think the presenting team could work quite well, if the producers could inject some new life into the scripts.

It isn`t the same team though. Clarkson himself had a huge input into the scripts and the script editor who worked with him also quit after the "fracas".

A nice review of how it used to work here.

Chris Harris should have been on the main programme along with a female driver presenter and le blanc for the yanks. Evans should stick to shouty silly stuff like TFI Friday and radio.

Chris Harris on cars channel on you tube is a much better watch than top gear.

Still a **** Top Gear is better than no Top Gear and getting more reality rubbish forced on us.

British TV can be described in a couple of clichés:

1. Chris Evans is everywhere

2. Yank voices in every programme

The BBC used to make a programme for the natives, hosted by three chaps to whom the viewer could relate - middle-aged, white men. Now it's not and the BBC ruined it in the hope of attracting continuing BBC Worldwide sales.

I presume the production crew is also new because gossip from Dunsford Aerodrome is that the new lot are choppers - and I don't mean 1970's bikes...

with a combination of head in hands and the fast forward button I've got through the first two episodes. Chris Evans is going to kill it. Replace him with Charlene Spiteri. pretty ropy start really - I'm not sure i'll make it through the other four episodes! viewing figures for episode 2 were down by a third on episode 1, which in itself recorded a record low for a TG opener for ten years.

I'm a TG devotee but am afraid I forgot it was on; caught the last 15 minutes and have no intention of watching it on iplayer. Great shame, it was once a must see programme for me.
