Bumble
Hi folks, I'm in a bit of bother; the missus was in the process of booking up a 4-day trip to France in October on a 'gourmet tour' for my birthday, but I refused to go as I'd be missing 4 days beating.... Anyway, it's now my job to find somewhere nice for us to go next year (after 1st of Feb!) to make up for being 'a massive ****'. Can anyone recommend any decent get-aways? Town or country, it doesn't really matter (not London though!), and we both like a bit of culture and good food. Cheers!
old'un
There's so many nice places but to get the ball rolling, Bath, Cardiff, Chester, York, where are you based?

oldypigeonpopper
hello, depending on where you are located you cannot beat some york-shire hospitality and maybe a drop of tadcaster ale, if you are going to push the boat out, not literally but i would also consider that fine city of Dublin, lots to see, some good places to eat, a glass or 2 of guiness and my favourite music. wymberley
Town or country? Exeter for the town and Exmoor or Dartmoor - both in reach - for the country. A stroll along the East Dart from Dartmeet on a nice winter's day, followed by the warreners' pie in the Warren House Inn at Postbridge takes some beating. Ollieollie
Exmoor is a good shout!
ferguson_tom
My two favourite places are Bath and Southwold. There isnt actually much to do in Southwold except wonder round the shops, drink and eat but for me that is the ideal weekend away without the kids! grrclark
Really all depends on where you are and how far you are prepared to travel. Given that your missus was going to do a gourmet tour and you like good food, what about doing a residential cookery masterclass type thing. Capitalising on OPP's suggestion about Yorkshire and Tadcaster ale you could visit Hazlewood Castle. In between Leeds and York, 5 mins from Tadcaster, they do gourmet cookery lessons, lots to do on site including a spa for the missus, you can shoot clays or throw axes. Bumble
Cheers gents. In Herefordshire, but travelling's not a problem. I'll have a look into Yorkshire I think, we've been meaning to go back to the Dales for a relaxing break after slogging through on the Coast to Coast. jonno 357
Bradford is the place you want to visit. Plenty of curry houses and taxis to see all the attractions
amateur
If your wife is dead-set on a gourmet trip, take her to Lyon. An interesting city in its own right and some of the best restaurants in France, without the "attitude" of Paris
stumfelter
Skegness is nice and if funds allow you could have a trip to Mablethorpe.

MrM
If you're looking at going abroad, try Ljubljana in Slovenia. Fly with Wizz airways from Luton (£85 odd return). Fantastic food - Boar, Venison, Bear (!) , great wines, very friendly people. Stay in Grand Union Hotel near main square.
ips
As its Feb and likely to be orrible why not just order a takeaway buy a few beers and turn the central heating up. I think the kids call it a staycation...👍
Mice!
I really like Edinburgh given the castle shops botanical gardens, but it will probably be a bit bleak in February. How about Italy, I've only been to Rome in late October or November but shouldn't be too busy?

kyska
I've only been to York once and loved it. However, Wensleydale appears to be stunning no matter what time of the year. I recently went and stayed in 'the barn' in askrigg, simple, cheap but really nice.
timmytree
The best weekend away I've ever had was in Feb this year. Stayed at Lynmouth for Valentines weekend in a little place called the Bonnicott hotel. A refurbished former rectory with beautiful rooms, sea views and exquisite food. We've been back since and are already looking at next year for a couple of breaks.
