JDog Posted March 2 Report Share Posted March 2 (edited) Long long gone are the days when every wedding I attended involved wearing tails. My tail suit is still with me but it will be at least twenty years since it fitted and it is gathering dust at a rate of knots. My tailor made suits no longer fit either. My body has changed in shape from a svelte figure in my forties to the corpulent monstrosity it now is. Those suits are cringing reminders of the past. I have a wedding to go to in June. In my entire wardrobe the only items that really fit are my jimjams, socks, oversized charity shop shirts and my shooting jackets. No possible combination of those would be suitable. Easy peasy you may say, go online and have a look. All I can see on there are pictures of very slim twenty something young men looking uncomfortable in garments they would never wear in real life. When I use filters and enter my sizes (at the top end of their scales) the same men appear. This is disheartening. Every site is the same. I do not want to embarrass my son on his wedding day but it may have to be long tweed trousers and a matching jacket. marsh man Posted March 2 Report Share Posted March 2 Why not go to M + S and get a suit off the peg , they have a variety of jackets and trousers for all sizes and they would more than likely have your size . I only had two suits, and the last one I had made at Hepworths and that will tell you how old it is and I wore it at my wife's recent funeral and it fitted me as if it had just been made , since then I have lost a bit of weight and I would have to use a belt to hold the trousers up but I can live with that as me wearing suits are as rare as a Blue moon and I cannot see me investing in another one anytime soon . London Best Posted March 2 Report Share Posted March 2 I was forced by my wife to buy a suit for my father’s funeral in 2004. Went to Matalan and bought a matching jacket and trousers. The jacket was £22 and the trousers £18. The suit looks smart but is as thin as tissue paper and the jacket has false pockets. No matter, I have worn it ever since to every funeral and every wedding bar one. I do have five other suits but they are all tweed and have comedy trousers which finish just below the knee. Beat me to it M&S have dramatically reduced their range of sizes in all their men's wear. They have cut out completely all the larger sizes keeping only to the middle of the size range which presumably sells the quickest. I bought a cheap(ish) M&S 'tropical' suit a few years ago for a family wedding (my one remaining 'proper' business suit had been attacked by moths and was much too warm for summer). My niece's wedding a couple of years ago was a VERY hot day with the reception in a marquee (even hotter). Whilst most were suffering, I was (reasonably) comfortable in my very light (linen?) tropical suit. I was not the only person wearing a tropical suit either. I suspect that for the majority of posters their reaction to having to buy a new suit Would be,,, OW MUCH. I'll not pay that.!! I you don't think that you'll get a lot of use out of it why not have a look round the charity shops. their are loads of things that might fit the bill at a fraction of the price. When my eldest sister had to go into a home, another sister had to sort all of her spare clothes out and she took about 3 car loads of clothes which we either unworn or nearly unworn to the hospice shop and she couldn't believe the amount of as new mens clothes that were there. Actually as mentioned my mate picked up an as new Hugo boss suit at a charity shop when hunting for a cheap suit after he left his hanging on the door at home when we were away.
