80 % of Britons want our police to be armed

No point in trying to have a sensible conversation on here the point that I was trying to make is all American police cars carry shotguns as backup and the point about clay training was to get people used to handling shotguns so that the next step training would be less expensive and time consuming.

Also if they enjoy shooting clays it would be more people into shooting and that has to be good but Ha what do I now I am just a normal shooter not one of the chosen ones like a lot of you think that you are.

Looking at this from another angle as people on here do not seem to trust the police with guns how about this issue every police car with one or two pump shotguns training would be simple in most cases the basics would be to send them on a clay pigeon course to teach them how to handle guns.

Would that mean that everyone who owns / wanted a shotgun would have to do a similar clay pigeon course?

That will only make the villains arm up even more ! As far as the Cumbria incident (not an illegal firearm) as an excuse, i'm sure the general public would favor SGC/FAC ban before voting the police to carry. I certainly wouldn't want every bobby armed, we have armed response units & its probably their deployment that needs to be reviewed.

Surely a shotgun wouldn't be viable, multiple projectiles = high risk of other party's being hurt. Issue slug and you have a massive over penetration issue and god knows where that slug could end up.

The only way I would welcome more armed police would be if there was a far higher qualification rate and far more regular training for them. The lot I work with I wouldn't give most a super soaker to, one has tasered himself buy accident and a few have had it pointed out to them there safety catch wasn't applied, I have also seen the armed officers asked to stand away from the civi security staff because there safety standards have left the staff concerned over there safety. They aren't even trusted to apply lights to the weapons and only shoot to 50 meters.

Popper full time police officers appropriately trained and equipped is what we need.

1) I don't believe that statistic

2) send them on a clay pigeon course ? Are you taking the P? Seriously come on mate, that's the stupidest thing I've read all week.

There's a reason a lot of people don't trust a lot of the police with guns.

It's not a highly skilled, super duper intelligent person who goes into the Police.

With cuts in pensions, pay, benefits and healthcare etc it's not that great anymore and attracts average people to be honest.

Slot of them do a great job, but there are plenty of numpties, who abuse the position or are bad eggs in ye wrong job etc.

I certainly wouldn't want them armed!

I also read that despite the government promising an extra 1500 armed officers they're is 300 vacancies for armed posts that already exist.

Seemingly a large % of police don't trust bosses/press/government not to hang them out to dry if they have to use it some day and end up on a murder charge themselves.

And to be fair i don't blame them.

The tabloid press are the worst (althou trial by internet forum is not far behind :whistling: ) calling for more trained firearms officers but hanging them for any mistake.

Not saying they should be immune from prosecution but they should be very well protected unless gross negligence on their part

If u take the tragic shooting on the tube quite a few yeas ago, its not the fault of the boy pulling the trigger their intel was bad/wrong but he honestly believed he was going to blow up a train and those officers followed him on to it, not many flok would have the bottle to do that

Do 80% of Police Officers want to be armed?

The European police forces can be using Army as Police it's only a uniform change ?

Would you train and arm Police Specials?

At the end of the day you have ROE and the chain of command to take the shot?

The first innocent person shot would have 80% of the public on their back?

good ole Express...80% figure is totally at odds with all other polls over the last 40 years.......Brits don't want armed bobbies...and the training seems to be with single shot pistol........would you want to go up against ak47s with a pistol??...specialist units and ultimately army/special forces would be called in if we had a Paris type attack.

As others are saying on here, its a job others want filling but not many actually want to do.

I don't believe armed officers get paid any more although I could be wrong / misinformed and also I wouldn't have the faith to believe you wouldn't be hung out to dry or used as a scape goat if you did pull the trigger.

Asked my mate who is in the police if he`d ever fancied training for armed response and he said no for much the same reasons as you`ve mentioned.

Power stations of the nuclear kind have possibly the most heavily armed police in the UK attached to them...not many "normal" armed units are issued belt-fed M249 SAW's!

More pig ignorance from Joe Public resulting in yet another half-baked emotion-lead response

I am a serving cop of 20 years. Previous military service, I own shotguns and rifles and have been around firearms longer than I care to remember. Would I want to be armed ? No thanks. Why would I want to put myself in a position where I get a split second to decide whether to take someone's life then get hung out whilst my decision is diseccted by others, myself facing a murder charge. Nope, I carry a baton , can of gas and a Taser. That will do me for the next few years until the retirement cheque arrives

Matt,

I suspect you are confusing armed MOD security 'Police' with little operational firearms experience to their home office colleagues.

Chalk and cheese on this subject.
