ips
I brought two and a half brace home from my syndicate shoot today and two brace from the estate on Monday. Freezer is full despite the Mrs making a rather nice game terrine.
bluesj
Now having just finished my roast pheasant (and very nice it was too) I would bet a weeks wages that the amount of game wasted wouldn't even be a speck in comparison with the amount of food wasted by shops and the public because of sell by and use by dates ( the use by date for the milk I made coffee with this morning was the 15th and its still good.) with out the stuff that is the wrong shape or not up to grade. I've got a freeze full of lamb that wouldn't make the grade and if it wasn't in my freezer it would have been in the bin.

It only goes to show that there is a section of townie shooters that do not understand etiquette. It is not just an individual problem with numbers shot or shooting 25 yard pheasants with large shot resulting in bruised meat but a symptom of commercialism with a limited imperfect productwith a niche market. With 8 guns, 20 beaters, you are only accounting for 28 brace (and likely to be the better looking birds), shoot previously relied on game dealer taking the remaining 47 brace of which probably half are inedible/damaged. Then there is the inceasingly tight rules on meat and game handling, requiring everything to be chilled and held below 7 degrees and if it goes above this temp or doesn't get there soon enough it is to be discarded. Biggest market out there by volume for game is probably dog food but even that has to be produced to human quality control standards. I'm not going to say we should bury our heads in the sand, but constantly washing our laundry in public does not do shooting much favours either. Its all very well moaning to mates but when u start putting it online its there for the whole world to see forever I've been around commercial shooting for decades now on some pretty big shoots and have heard odd rumors over the years but never ever believed them, in the past. Althou I must admit i could see the potential for it now with game dealers charging or refusing to take them in some cases. Well said. This season at least 50% of the time I haven’t been asked if I’d like any! I have got no idea what the protocol is concerning giving the guns a brace of birds up your neck of the woods but I wrongly presumed it was the same up and down the country. I have been lucky enough to go on several of the big shoots in Norfolk and quite a few of the smaller ones , and in most cases the guns come across to the game larder to look at the days bag , the keeper ask the gun what he / she would like a brace of whatever is hanging up , it could well be , Pheasant , Duck , Woodcock or Partridge which is a trice ( 3 ) , the birds are handed over in one hand and the tip is handed over in the other hand in one slick movement . Also over the last year or two the beaters can also take a brace once the guns have took what they want .
johnnytheboy
That’s exactly how it had been but I noticed over the past few years how this has crept in. One estate this year was insistent we took as much as possible as they didn’t want anything left after the guns and beaters had left! Needless to say their handshake was increased! I had loads of pheasant to try all sorts of different recipes! Its the one thing I miss about syndicate shooting was dividing the birds up between us before leaving! Never went home empty handed. Suggesting a gun is asked not to return if he/she refuses to take birds just isn’t feasible and a bit naive. Scully has it here, most guns pay a lot of money, its up to them if they want the birds! Lets not blame the guns if the shoots can't find a method of getting the birds into the food chain and find an incinerator a better option. Sad state of affairs if we lose one the traditions of game shooting I know a few keepers who would welcome you with open arms if the hand shake was increased and you cleared the game larder out , it would save them a lot of hard work and being rewarded at the same time ....... cant be bad. To suggest otherwise IS naive. A lot of shooters paying upwards of £30.00 per bird plus vat aren’t interested in taking a few birds home; they’re there for the shooting. It’s a business. I shoot in a couple of syndicates. We pay to shoot and do in fact take at least a couple of braces each home, but there is always a surplus. They usually all find a home eventually, but we wouldn’t stop shooting them if they didn’t.
Grandalf
Just delivered 16 brace around the village. All FOC and it gets us a lot of good publicity. Hamster
Does anyone know how much it would cost to buy a plucker ? I bet more shooters would take birds if they didn't have to feather them once they got home plus it would probably be even easier to put them into the local food chain ? ! Still say its ettiquete to take a brace from the day.
billytheghillie
Sir Ian Botham tried to set up a campaign earlier this year to give local game to food banks etc. he was shot down with health & safety regs and other silly rules. I never knew he was shot down, I thought it was a very good idea. For a plucker it will depend on the quality etc but range from 2-300 for cheap makes to about 700 plus for better makes, quite hard to find decent 2nd hand ones. Often u find them needing new plates which can be quite expensive and time consuming to change out. I've been thinking about buying 1 for a god few years now. Could u hang a pre lucked pheasant?? Say u hd a lucking machine at the shoot could u pluck all the birds immediately then hang them afterwards? I can imgine hygine or flies could be an issue

In my opinion guns who refuses to take home game should not be asked back. The amount of effort that goes into rearing these birds is huge. Such a shame. GingerCat
Just my 10 pence worth but to kill just for the sake of killing is simply slaughter which given the publics view of firearms and hunting in general I can' see it staying about much longer. One national paper picks up that an estate is incinerating birds rather than put them into the food chain... well can you imagine it on a slow news day. No doubt it will soon go the way of fox hunting and the like. Which will in turn make it easier to limit the reasons to posses firearms and shotguns and in time that too will be outlawed. We really don' help ourselves much.
