Put what you want through it for ducks Lloyd. Gambore supersteel 32g are a top duck cartridge.  Don't worry about a HP steel.

Lots use a semi auto, some still use a sxs.

I've got a semi auto Remington 11-87 that'll take 3" carts and HP steel I believe but I do like shooting the old rough and ready side by side :)

PS what do you use? 32g 5's ?

Just read this off the web re gamebore super steel

Gamebore 12-bore Super Steel is a high-velocity steel load that is available in boxes of 25. These 32g loads are a 2¾in cartridge that come in shot sizes 5, 4 and 3. The 4s and 5s are suitable for use in standard 2¾in chambered guns; however, the size 3 shot should only be used in high-performance steel shot-proofed guns, with barrels and chokes designed for steel loads.

I don't think there is any one gun that would be suitable for all types of wildfowl shooting , If Lloyd is only going to do inland wildfowling then his side x side is more than good enough with like figgy said , 32 gms steel , if he was going to have a bash at coastal I would go for a three inch so you can put something a bit heavier in the spout when you get a chance at the geese , everyone will have favourite gun and cartridge combination , so find what suit you and then stick with it ,

For my ducks shooting which is all inshore.  I use my old sxs which is 3/4 and full choked and use gamebore32g 4 bismuth . Have wondered about using standard steel through it but wasn't sure ? Otherwise where I need a bit more I use a hatsen escort s/a with eley VIP steel 3inch 36g 3 or for closer stuff eley VIP steel 32g 5s and have also used 32g 3s

I like shooting duck with all 25 of my 12 bores and also with my 19 ten bores but occasionally i take out one of my three   8 bores.Once in a blue moon one of my 4 bores comes out.I of course transport them in one of my 4x4 cars but  often find that my new model range rover suits my needs best .If there is a lot of snow  i find my snow mobile is useful across the fields and one of my ten bores is easily carried on my back .i have on one occasion decided to leave the snow mobile on the field as a sudden thaw meant the snow melted.I did not bother retrieving it as i found it easier to buy another one.
