Getting sick of other dogwalkers.

I've had dogs all my life, but lately I'm getting sick of other dogwalkers, particularly all these new dog owners that have shown up since COVID!.... the type that like to leave their 'fur babies' run up to other dogs while out for a walk so that the owners get tangled up in their lead and trip over each others dogs.

When not out out in the fields I take her for a quick walk on a local pathway, the path is narrow and is used by a lot of people, families etc.... but at weekend it is clogged with a lot of out of towners bringing their 'fur babies' for a walk and leaving them 'socialise' with other peoples dogs, its just getting horrendously annoying getting tangled up and falling over excited dogs.

My dog isn't particularly bothered by other dogs, but she can be nervous of strangers and can get excited. She likes to stroll away with me at heel..... but its starting to get annoying, to the point where I'm going to have to start educating other dog owners on it.... without making a scene or ending up a viral video sensation.

Has anyone else been in similar situations?

Those stupid long leads for dogs are a nightmare for getting everything tangled up . I wish people would just either have there dog on a short lead if you feel you can't control it ,or let it off completely  but train you dog to heal and return on command  .

Walk your dog down the park with loads of room and let them all just get on,its so much less  stressful  for all involved.

If you don't have access to parks and fields then maybe people shouldn't own a dog in the first place outside or a guide dog  etc

my farmer mate has blocked off all the field accesses with telegraph poles as he is sick and tired of washing his horses down as they stink of dog poo.....the town folk drive 3-4 miles to go there and treat it as a dog toilet...he has had several people try and take him to court as they swing off the road straight onto his land and run into the telegraph pole in the grass...........and squash their car bumper

It’s like Cruft’s round here every morning and evening. The one’s who let their untrained mutt run up to my dog that, being nervous and excitable, has taken years to train, and disturb her from heel are particularly annoying. It was particularly bad during Covid and got to the stage where I fell out with somebody or other nearly every time I went out. One woman with FIVE uncontrollable dogs did call the police after I told her a few home truths. The officer told her (surprise, surprise) what I had told her, that it was her responsibility to keep her dogs under control. The officer was more polite than I was!

I nearly smacked a guy a couple of years back, my bitch was minding her own business but his dog kept trying to mount her. I suggested, politely, that he put his dog on a lead several times without success till finally shouted to get that fornicating thing off my dog, his answer was that she was leading him on so I squared up to him, almost face to face, and said "How? By biting him?" he went red and slowly walked away muttering under his breath, I offered to go back over to him so I could hear what he was saying but he declined. All these new dog owners have their own vocabulary, a badly trained and controlled dog is now called "reactive"

Them long lead are just no good tangle you up when you’re walking your dog and the people think is funny and the other thing is doggie **** bags why pick it up and then throw the bag on the floor the **** would go in time I know some of it on shoes and washed away with rain but if it’s in a plastic bag it’s there for ever we pick our dogs up and take to the nearest bin we can find.

true story now............

when i was picking up regular......(it was a big shoot with several unlimited days)...there was always a big team of pickers....which was fine ...'cept one of the "so called pickers"...was a total bullpoo ******....all he did was to pick birds under the guns....and make out he was the best man forthe job.....trouble was he had one very very oversexed black lab...that enjoyed nothing else than trying to roger every bitch on the shoot (and they wernt in heat)...my bitch Duchess got fed up with the constant hassel and nearly tore his head off.....

one of the boys said he was going to put a stop to it....and he was in the wood behind the guns picking up pricked birds and this black dog was in the wood stealing birds off the other dogs...so he got hold of it and stuck his finger up the bum of the lab..!!!!.......but on his finger he had chilli powder.....the dog spent the rest of the day licking its rear end and dragging it across the ground...but didnt bother any of the other dogs.......

I’ve been on some shoots where the chilli finger should have been applied to some of beaters and guns.

Know a fella that done something similar to a cat that kept emptying its bowels into his flower beds, he got hold of it and give it the back of a spoon dipped in command mustard across the ringpiece. Said it took off like a missile after application.

Have any of you skilled and experienced dog owners tried politeness and calmly talking to these people before losing your rag with them?  Perhaps these new dog owners might actually benefit from a word in their shell-like from someone with experience?

Thought not.

Actually I have tried that approach on a fella who turned up in the same fields that I use with his out of control barking at everything springer and his underweight but seemingly calm/doped pointer. His springer took a go at biting the stitched end of my cockers recently surgically docked tail. I pushed it away with my stick to keep it out of range and shouted at it to F'off before his manic shouting managed to get it to walk back towards him.

He asked if it bit my dog and I explained what happened...although the fact he asked if it bit whenever he didn't see the incident would inform of the kind of mentality the dog had... I told him he would need to get a grip and control his dog or something terrible would happen. Man near flew into a rage of how dare I tell him his dog was out of control, I walked on and left him to it as I could sense things were going to escalate to him requiring dental treatment if the conversation continued.

Well what would you suggest saying to them? … bearing in mind the following;

  • that I've just nipped out for a walk,
  • these people are complete strangers and I have neither the time nor patience to build a relationship with them.
  • I just want them to get out of my way while I go about my business

How do you react to them calmly and politely, without causing a scene? and just to be clear,  I'm not changing my walking habits or route because this is what's local to me.

I have tried many times trying to be polite but most just cannot grasp why I don't want them near me and the pup I'm training, one woman with her huge great fluffy thing simply got quite perplexed as I refused to let my dog run around totally out of control with her's even saying it wasn't fair on my dog, no amount of explanation as to why I didn't want to would work .

Another woman with a unless dog that she was trying to get back to her, shouting and whistling made no difference to it, I walked off but the chuffin dog just kept following us then she eventually caught me up and preceeded to blame me for her dog not going back to her. I no longer have any time for people with unruly dog's.

I wonder if you would be prepared to fund me doing this as it would take all day in my area and I have a living to make and a mortgage to pay.

Thought not.

Me and the misses out walking last week. Fella approaching with a large black lab off its lead, which comes bounding over towards us barking and growling. Then circled us both, continuously growing and barking. Then back to the owner, then back to us, going mad barking & growling, make no doubt there was aggression there.  I first commented by saying, please get your dog under control, which he couldn’t, I then stated that dog should be on a lead, his reply was “it usually is?” My reply  “well it fkn isn’t now is it”. All this going on while this lunatic dog is barking growling running around both me and the misses.  My last comment was “get your fkn dog under control “ which he still couldn’t “ stating I’m trying” so I instructed my misses to start backing away from the dog and it’s owner to give the dog space as for whatever reason it felt threatened and no doubt had fk all training. My last comment was “your dog should be kept on a lead when out in public as you clearly have no control over it”. He walked off dog still not on its lead. Firstly it’s unusual behaviour for a lab. I’ve been around dogs most of my life, my misses not so much but she was absolutely petrified. The attitude of the owner was that it was more my fault for being out walking. I genuinely wanted to meet up with him again on our return walk back to the car, alas he’d gone. Guy was a total imbecile.

It seems that people on here are introverts and just want to be left alone.  I get it, truly I do, but we are a small island of 67million people!

You must, as someone who values their SGC/FAC, be able to interact with people and not escalate situations.  It's an unpleasant, rock-and-hard-place situation, but that's the reality.

If you want to walk your dog somewhere that you're truly alone, I suggest the forests of Scandinavia, or your own 'back 40' in the US Midwest.  Might need to keep one chambered in case of coyotes though.

When I see anyone coming with, or without a dog, mine are made to sit or lie down until they are by or their dogs are brought under control.

I do the same. But the out of control pets usually manage to make my nervous bitch move from where I dropped her.  That’s when I lose it with the owners, who just can’t understand how much effort I have had to put into my dog.

Met another **** with a wild cocker**it this morning. Never seen him before in my life and I have walked the same footpath since 1967.

Your dead right. I have well behaved dogs because I have worked my ***** off to get it that way, it’s not an accident!

  • 2 weeks later...

Where I often go is a large area, so bumping into others can be avoided, but there are always two "old biddies" there with 3 or 4 dogs that they walk for other people. The 2 largest dogs, lurchers I think, often pull the leads out of their hands and go bowling into any dog near by, barking and showing aggression, one dog now has a muzzle on due to its uncontrolled behaviour. The old ladies are clearly not capable of dog walking these hounds and the negative, frightened vibes they give off, are definitely being picked up by the dogs, making them feel as though they have to be the leaders, protectors, not good for others with well behaved dogs just trying to enjoy a morning walk. And what is it with people who pick up dog poo in bags, then leave the bags where ever they fancy, why go to the countryside for the beauty, just to mess it up.

Reactivity is a “thing” (recognise it’s also an excuse) as you yourself demonstrated perfectly
