All I can say is I am glad I have no longer got a mortgage with the never ending rise in the mortgage rates , mind you when I did have one things were pretty tight then , the building game was fairly poor money and to make ends meet I took on a lot of small building jobs , most of these were done after tea and at weekends and I know at one time me and my mate took a two week holiday from our employers to build an extension , this carried on until the tax men investigated our ( wrong doing ) and wanted there share , we coughed up a little to keep them happy and with the proceeds made we had paid most , if not all our mortgage off . :good:

Don't think people taking on second and in some cases a third job is anything new, my mother had two jobs when I was a nipper.

Marsh man, tell me about it…..I remember when interest rates on mortgages hit 15%, that's if you could get one.

Hello, well not many 2nd jobs pay £15,770 per hour like Liz Truss or £21, 000 for X PM Boris 🤔

If people are stupid enough to pay that sort of money and they can do it without it effecting their job as an MP then good luck to them.

If you were in a position to earn that sort of money would you turn your nose up at it?

I manage a team of design and CAD staff for a specialist electrical company and despite our company being well above the industry average in terms of salary, we still have a few staff that are working part time jobs in evenings and on weekends.

It's mostly for specific goals such as mortgage deposits and not to make ends meet.

Not surprisingly, they all live in the south east of the UK where an average home can be 10-15 times the yearly salary. Must be quite disheartening for a young person to be earning a reasonable wage (approx £40k for most of them) and being near to the top of salary you can expect for your given skillset and still having to wait tables in the evening to even get your foot on the housing ladder.

With regards to MPs and second jobs, it's where they make their money. Do you think that someone would take on a position like PM for only £160k P/A? They do it for the cushy C level and advisory positions that follow where the earning potential is in the millions of £'s per annum. That's on top of the after dinner speaking and events they will also do when in seat and in retirement. Take a look at the absolute **** we have working in parliament at the moment and imagine that a block was put on any additional earnings. Westminster would be a ghost town overnight and then the real morons and losers would get into positions of power (like the Senedd but worse).

IMO, positions like PM etc should be paid at the same rate that a CEO of FTSE 100 company would earn. Standard MPs should be paid in line with what most top level officials would earn. Only then will we start to see real talent take on these positions and not psychopaths with daddy issues etc like we have now.

i come from a time when to buy a house/mortgage...the house price had to be no more than 2.5 times your salary....at that time i was looking at a queen anne 4 bedroom beamed house with inglenook fireplace in Mundesly for £30,000 quid.......and a big bungalow in Old Catton in 3/4 acre of land for the same price.......

i could afford that...my wife wouldnt have to work ...but she did 3 days aweek on a franchise in M&S norwich

life was good and easy ....and well paid jobs everywhere with plenty of overtime and double time on sundays and double time and day in lue for bank holidays...

i loved going to work and getting anice big FAT wage packet on a friday...full of lovely folding used bank notes and change

the welding boys in yarmouth working for sea&land pipeline were on insane money and after working for 4 weeks used to go out and buy a new Porshe for cash :w00t:

One would have thought that as an MP you are elected to serve your constituents & it is a job that to do properly you shouldnt have time to do second jobs!

Considering the level of responsibility,  (supposed) long hours and the MASSIVE amount of grief for it, the pay for it isn’t all that.

Currently salary £86,584.

Just under £5,000 a month take home. It’s a lot of money, and leaves you in a very secure financial position, but you’re not exactly going to go out and buy a Lambo and a 6 bed Manor House on that sort of money.

[Bring on the comments from people saying they earn £15k/20k/25k etc and how great pay it is.]

At several points of my life I have had 2 jobs, at times 3, if you want nice things or to go on nice trips etc I have always had the attitude of you go out and earn it. Having that second job usually allowed us to go on special holidays, trips, buy a new gun, etc.

These days however people are getting 2nd jobs just to pay the energy bills, pay the mortgage and feed the kids.

And that’s the real difference between then and now.

Interest rates may or hit 15% but the loans were tiny in comparison, all other bills smaller, wages significantly higher by comparison.

In todays terms, interest rates have to hit 6%+ to be the equivalent of when they were 15% in the past.

They hit 6.66% last week! I think a lot of the misery is waiting to happen as most peoples fixed rate deals haven’t come to an end yet.

What I want to know, is whos profiteering now. With both parts of a couple now working, the UK should be rolling in cash, with the public purse overflowing.

Back in the day jobs were easy to come by, the man would go to work and the woman make a home, that was enough for most to buy a house, have a comfortable lifestyle and funded the country's public services, with decent military expenditure, public toilets, road sweeps and a decent police force ect. Not to mention large infrastructure projects being built like nuclear power stations, motorways and hospitals.

So what's happened? Someone somewhere is seeing the benefits but it's not the general public that's for sure.

I'm glad I'm not young in today's world.

That is something that roles through my mind as well - They want more and more each year - but then we get less and less

No Dentists, nigh on impossible to get a doctor - toll roads/bridges - the future of being charged per mile (as well as ULEZ et al). Roads in a terrible state.

TBH I think that a lot of money is going on making people more dependent on the state....

Bear in mind that at this time basic/lowest tax rate was also 34%

Not until 1983 but was binned by Broon in 2000

Not quite true.

Historically, you could claim mortgage interest relief at your marginal rate of tax, prior to 1983.

The change in 1983 was administrative, to give the tax relief at source.

Yes, you are right, Labour took away all domestic mortgage tax relief in 2000.

When we first had the kids i would stroll in at 5 see the wife for five minutes and she would go to work till 11pm it was like ships in the night , then i went onto 12 hours shifts mon /frid granny would look after the kids till i got in and we used to deliver telephone directory's or the wife did as she didn't pay tax and it seemed like we got all the **** routes blooming flats etc . Then i went onto shifts 4 on 4 off and the wife went full time  easier to do other jobs for extra cash then the kids left and we both retired mortgage paid off  but all you do is eat out a couple of times a week , but we would be fine but you didn't expect everything to double in price

In the year 2000 the richest man in Britain had a wealth of £3.7 billion - that’s equivalent to around £6.7 billion adjusting for inflation.

Today the richest man in Britain has a wealth of £35 billion, nearly 5 times higher than in 2000, even with taking inflation into account.

I’m no socialist, but it’s statistically true that the super rich have gotten much, much richer.

Coventry my home town as was you could leave work walk down the road at lunch time and get another job easily but as the vote to join Common Market came about jobs started to disappear and not replaced  with the same level of labour and skills .Wages topped up with U C benifits paid at a  level which made it uneconomical to work we rely on imports so where is the cash coming from with house prices and other costs were not so high needing 2 incomes to survive
