But if I only had the two cartridge in the gun and none in my pocket etc I wouldn't take the second shot I probably would take the first. I'd go and get more cartridges or go home

Ditto. That’s a fair point, and one I hadn’t really considered until now. 
I hold the wood pigeon as a challenging bird, in much higher regard than the title of vermin in which it is regarded. 
If it could be guaranteed that the numbers would be there, I would much rather spend a good day in the hide than a good day driven.
