aberisle
I got myself some 3" 410 lyalvale cartridges with the view to using them and then reloading the cases but i had half a dozen out of a box that looked as if they had been to hell and back after the first firing from new. If i had loaded cartridges and they turned out like this i would be thinking "what the hell had i done wrong?" here is a pic of the meltdown cases
holloway
That would worry me a little ,your 410 is chambered for 3 inch shells ? It's all I can think of.

Ultrastu
I get it with some nsi carts but not as bad as that .that's some serious mealting going on . And it does happen in 3 inch chambered guns . Edited August 11, 2021 by Ultrastu
aberisle
The gun is 3" chambered, it happened with 6 of the 25 lyalvale cartridges
Walker570
Quite a common occurence with some cases. I shoot both factory and own load Fiocchi cases and rarely see a problem and normally get a coupl of loads out of a case before dispensing with them. Have not noticed it effected pheasants or partridge.
holloway
I think I would send that picture to Lylevale just to see what they say. They may suggest you don't shoot anymore and send you another slab.
Windswept
Have had less damaged cartridges when I've shot 3" carts in a 2 1/2 chamber. The damage was neater than those, what gun were they fired in? As mentioned I'd contact Lyalvale, they've been helpful when I've asked them questions in the past. Stonepark
I wonder what powder they are using, as needs to be very slow to melt cases that badly on the way out, either that or underpowered primers.
Smokersmith
I seem to remember a very similar post in the last few years. Worth letting them know, bu I'd still be using them if they were working.
Papercase
I've had this on a good number of 2.5" Lyalvale .410 carts - 16g from memory fired from an old battered 2.5" Webley&Scott bolt action. Shots seem fine just carts look the same as that after shooting. Having being the only .410 I've ever shot I thought it was normal - I take it thats not the case? They used to use SP3, but I wonder if that has changed.
ditchman
its a buisness...........might be that the plastic they have chosen has a lower melting point....to make the cases un-usable for reloading ?
Walker570
It is not just Lylevale I had a bunch of RC melt just the same and Hull High Pheasant. I think Ditchie has hit the nail...again..... it is the plastic being used as I never have that problem, if it is a problem with Fiocchi. As said, shot a fair few thousand in the last seven to ten years as I rarely shoot another gauge these days and things still fall out of the sky. hawkfanz
i get it with some eley, wouldn,t worry about it,and xpress shells are no good for reloading, they swell the plastic,if you want to reload buy fiocchi instead they reload good but they are noisy
derbyduck
whats the barrel like is there much fouling or plastic left in the bore ? I would be concerned firing those through a moderated gun !
Windswept
I've probably only shot a 1000 or so .410 cartridges, mostly Eley 2 1/2s but a few hundred Lyalvale 3" subsonics and a few Lyalvale 2"s in a few different .410s and never had any melting like the pic at all. Keith RW
if you want some carts for reloading I have some once fired that have been collected over the years, far more that I will ever make use of as have some brass cases now also drop me a PM if needed
markm
I had the same with factory loads express 28 bore (probably the same plastic). Express’ response was nothing to worry about, the plastics reaction occurs well after the shot and wad has left the barrel. Old Boggy
I had a problem with Eley VIP Game in 16 bore a few years ago. After checking chamber length etc. I sent a few used cases off to Eley and they sent me a replacement slab via the gunshop where I purchased them. Couldn`t argue with that. However, it wasn`t a case of meltdown, purely the ends blown away. I didn`t affect their killing power against the pigeons if I recall. London Best
A friend had the problem of ends blown away in a 16 bore a couple of years back. I’m not sure, but I think they were Hull cartridges.

Walker570
I shot a couple of hundred of the newish Lylevale 3 inch Supreme Game 410s #7s last season and they performed so well I purchased another 250 for this season. They killed very well if I did my bit. One or two did show signs of melted ends but did not effect the performance. As said I believe it may be the type of plastic used because I have reloaded 3 inch Fiocchi shells three times and never had they burn or swell. Hence I only reload those these days.
