Haven’t had a pork chop with kidney in since Jesus’ dog was a puppy! 🙂

I think the appeal with the three Tebay services is that they provide an alternative to either Burgerking or McDonalds which dominate the M6 services, in Cumbria at least. Todhills, Southwaite, Killington, Forton, all offer nothing more than BK or Costas.
On our return from Crabtree the other night, I had Macaroni cheese, chips and peas 😋, mate had a full English, but the choice of meals was good. Both were good, albeit as you say, a bit overpriced.

Ahh fair enough. I just couldn’t fathom my fellow travellers’ enthusiasm the last time I was there. Had what I presume was a good conversation with a duck & left without purchasing anything.

😀 Yeah, there’s plenty of ducks! None on the menu unfortunately.
There’s some very good local(ish) produce in the farm shop in Tebay West, but at premium prices.
They do pay their staff well though, by all accounts, from those who work there.

😂Unfortunately my daughter worked there part time whilst doing her degree whilst at Hull university. If the till takings did not balance at closing time the whole team where kept in the building unpaid  until the problem issue was resolved. That included midnight finishes. I loathe the company

As did mine for a very short spell! She hated it! She said it wasn’t just the lack of training, but the fact you could only speak to senior staff via email! 🤷‍♂️

The services that have the McD's, Costa, BK, KFC - they are owned by the services and are only under a licence to the relevant brands. I done work for the company that provided all their till and recipe programs..That includes their shops.

Next time you go, if you get split orders- your receipts from the different outlets will look exactly the same

My normal "takeaway" intake consists of the occasional fish n chips or sandwich from the village cafe, however this morning I was presented with an unexpected McDonald's for breakfast.

It must be 40 years since I've had anything from a McDonald's.

I couldn't believe what utterly dry, tasteless food it was, like eating cardboard, truly disgusting.

I'm normally the one to hoover up food as I can't stand waste, but I chucked most of this away.

As they appear to do quite well as a business, what makes anyone eat there, is it just the convenience or have people forgotten what real food tastes like?

Or is it me and I'm just a fussy eater?

I see they haven't changed since I had my one and only experience.

Quite like a BK though.

i like layby "dirty burgers".....loads of dirty greasy onions...........really hit the spot for me

I mentioned earlier in the thread that neither McDonalds or Little Chef have ever made me ill.  The same cannot be said for layby burger vans ..........

We stop at Tebay (north bound) for supper on our way up to the north coast. It’s great for a service station. I had the steak and ale pie, with the macaroni cheese meal as a side (I don’t like being hungry when driving). The boys all ate full meals for just £1, proper butcher sausages and proper fish. Great value. They’ve never been to MacDonalds. I’m not morally against the place, it’s just the food is awful so it is pointless and bad value. 3 adult meals and 3 children’s meals and drinks (mainly water) came to under £35 at Tebay, no idea how much Macdonald’s would be but must be similar.

The other stops on our trip north are much better food than Tebay, the House of Bruar (cooked breakfast on way up, steak on the way down) and the Pier at Lairg. We’ve been doing this trip for 20 years so have nailed the best pit stops.

House of Bruar

Not had the House of Bruar breakfast - though for many years I stayed very close on Atholl Estates, I was there too late on the way up and left too early on the way home!  Stopped for a cup of tea and slice of cake sometimes if running early - and it was always very very busy, but food was good.  There is much more room there now (I think the first time I went it had only been open about 2 years).  I now prefer the west coast route north, going round Glasgow to the south west, then Erskine bridge over the Clyde, and up past Loch Lomond, over Rannoch moor and down to Fort William via Glencoe.

😂 My Dad as a truck driver took me to many good, bad and ugly food stations as a lad, so I’m a bit partial to lay-by vans myself. As we worked away a lot we found some really good ones, the most memorable being the big one just off M6 J16, heading for Leek. There are many more.

If you are in the MK area look out for the Super Sausage Cafe, avoid weekends as it's packed but great food/price and Tea made with Tea leaves like it should be.

I know the Northampton branches, many pre fishing breakfasts taken in them.
