fitzy
Dog just been to vets for booster. Vet commented that she shouldn't have plaque on teeth at her age. Dog is on dry food and doesn't have treats. Tried those dental sticks but they're gone in a flash. Any suggestions to get the dog's teeth back to pearly white? daveboy
They did a test a few months back on a vet TV program...Tooth brush and dog toothpaste was the only effective way. (after a vet descale)
JDog
There is an additive to food called 'Plaqueoff' or something similar. A friend tells me it is effective.
Konnie
Bones from the butcher every couple of weeks ,or hide chews will get them nagging.
ips
We have same problem. Dentstix gone in am instant as you say. Wife uses brush on em but not sure how effective it is. She won't chew on anything but her ball 😁
Yellow Bear
There is an additive to food called 'Plaqueoff' or something similar. A friend tells me it is effective. Yes it is and combine it with sea jerky twists (fish43dogs) instead of dentasticks and is does a fairly good job.
Ooops
Bones from the butcher every couple of weeks ,or hide chews will get them nagging. This is exactly what mine get and it works a treat
scotslad
Another 1 for bones from butcher. The dogs love them I also throw in deer carcasses as and when, also chucking in heads and feet with the skin on, they say the skin helps to brush them. Also if u can find cast antlers will chew on them for ages.
12gauge82
+1 for a bone from the butcher, obviously never give a cooked bone, one sitting and they're teeth will be clean and shiny.
al4x
Bones and the right dried food seems to work for mine, one is 11 and no real signs of scale appearing Bones and the right dried food seems to work for mine, one is 11 and no real signs of scale appearing
loriusgarrulus
+1 for the plaque off. Works on cats too. We also get beef leg bones from the butcher.
Stonepark
Raw bones at least once a fortnight, but you can descale them yourself, I normally use the point of the awl on my SAK- slip it gently into gap between gum and tooth and then catch edge of plaque and scrape to dislodge - no need to get vet to do it most of whom seem to want to put them under anesthetic for what you as a human just get to sit there at a dentist. al4x
You as a human don't bite if you are scared!
Stonepark
You as a human don't bite if you are scared! All my dogs have been brought up to let me handle them in any way necessary, eyes, ears, teeth etc. If you acclimatise a dog to it when young, they should not bite under any circumstances. Duckandswing
There is an additive to food called 'Plaqueoff' or something similar. A friend tells me it is effective. This does work. Mine have it added to each meal.
R1nut
You as a human don't bite if you are scared! I have 4 and descale and clean by hand! If treated and trained correctly they will not bite!

Royboy
My vet told me the same and wanted stupid money to remove plaque ! I bought my dogs a couple of antlers and give them to chew on for half a hour every month and it's done the trick, you could see big clumps of plaque coming off 🤢🤢
bigbird
We chip it off - it's very satisfying 😂
Sat Rat
BB, What do you use to scrape/chip the plauqe off with?.
12gauge82
If your dog will eat one just get a bone, if you haven't done so before you'll be amazed how effective it is, just use common sense, no cooked bones and if worried give supervision while eating
silver pigeon69
Sheeps neck from the butcher! Works a treat.
bigbird
BB, What do you use to scrape/chip the plauqe off with?. It comes off really easily so whatever's to hand, even a long fingernail will do if ifs really thick or one of those metal emery board type things but the ones with the flat top not the sharp top
Sat Rat
Brilliant thanks BB,I spent a very satisfying hour chipping the plauqe off my boys teeth, certainly came away easily enough
