JohnfromUK
A very remarkable man in so many ways. The way he coped with and overcame physical limitations was quite extraordinary. A real inspiration.

Grandalf
Why was he never knighted? Or did I miss something? When you think of some of the clowns who have received this honour... Going to have to get my copy of Brief History of Time out again. Maybe this time it will make some sort of sense.

Allegedly (and I'm quoting what I found by Google without any confirmation) "Hawking revealed that he had been approached with the offer of a knighthood in the late 1990s and declined. This was apparently over the UK government's handling of science funding."
panoma1
His scientific specialism was way above my understanding, so I can't really comment on his achievements, but the NHS, his carers and his determination did well to keep him alive for so long!I I understand a few years ago he divorced the wife who stood by him throughout and who bore him three children, and married his nurse? This being the case it seems on the face of it, a bit ungrateful? I would have thought it more understandable if she had divorced him! I further understand that there were allegations of abuse within this marriage, charges were later dropped.....and they were subsequently divorced. So despite his disabilities he lived a life! His passing may be a loss to the world of science, but it will be a greater loss to his family!

saddler
RIP The last "work" he possibly did, was in the new series of A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on BBC radio. Not only fitting but something he no doubt got a great deal of enjoyment from. The movie about his life is well worth watching

His biggest ‘discovery’ is his theory that black holes aren’t closed systems but radiation can leak out (Hawking radiation), which I believe used quantum theory to calculate in some mind-bogglingly clever way. But his biggest contribution to science was probably his ability to convey incredibly complex ideas to the world in an understandable way, like Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson, but much a more iconic figure. Still could understand it.

Falcon. I appreciate what you are saying and after listening to his friend Micheal Green professor of theoretical Astrophysics at Cambridge I Still have to say that it is still all supposition and theory.
