Dave-G
Bearing in mind that silly EU has hamstrung vacuum cleaner manufacturers, what are people finding brilliant? Apart from our kitchen and bathroom the rest of the house is carpeted if that makes any difference. Also her indoors has very bad arthritis in her hands and wrists so can't lift a lot of weight nor manouver it as well as some might. Seeing a lot of 'Shark' adverts - any good? figgy
Daughter has a Shark and my wife tried it, she also has bad hands and wrists and struggled as the weight is all up on the pole tube at the front so she said it was awful for balance and wanted to twist round at the slightest move. GTec air ram is ok light and does what wife needs day to day. For a god clean the Oreck like from the adverts professional model and works very good and also the Sebo. haynes
Henry. They last forever. Well nearly.
simonm
We recently got a Shark cordless, the batteries last quite well and it came with two. We're pretty pleased it, the only downside in my view is the bin is small and needs emptying often, but I suppose that's better than it not picking anything up! fitzy
Highly recommend Sebo. Do have a Shark which we mainly use on hard floors, works well but feels fragile. Best suction is from a wet/dry vacuum cleaner as not limited to the EU 900w limit on vacuum cleaners.
MrPhantom
Another Shark vote here. Seems quite light to me and very manoeuvrable. We have one of the 'lift away' ones so the lower part including the roller can be easily removed which makes it lighter still. Perfect for stairs, car, etc.
ferguson_tom
We have a Sebo upright jobby, works well on both hard and carpeted floors as the height adjusts accordingly. We have two kids and a long haired collie and still going strong 5 years on.
Mice!
have a look at second hand, there is a place near us that does refurbs, this way you can still get an older more powerful machine.

Had mine for over a year, its brilliant makes my old Dyson like an Asthmatic in comparison.

Wb123
I have been impressed with every well maintained Dyson i have used. They do need to be kept in good order though to keep sucking properly.

lord_seagrave
Henry - built like a tank. For sheer power though, nothing beats a Miele - ours is ridiculously strong! LS
oowee
I fancy one of the robot vacuum cleaners. Our house is single storey with hard floors throughout so should be ideal. A couple of friends have them and they are pretty impressive.

adzyvilla
We bought a karcher wet and dry bagged vaccum from homebase. Similar size to a Henry, but more powerful. With the dog running around everywhere leaving hair, it does a great job.
McSpredder
I read somewhere that fine dust (the sort you get when rubbing down with sandpaper) can wreck a cyclone type vacuum cleaner. Apparently the cyclones are excellent if your main interest is in picking up a piece of fluff, but fail to separate out very small particles, which pass through and clog the fan and motor, therefore a bagged machine is preferable for fine dust. Fact or fiction?
Ricko
I have two Henry's, one is about 30 years old (before they were called Henry) and one about 6 years. Simple and effective.
das
GTech cordless, best vac we've ever had. Also have a Henry (sold them when I was in business) but never really rated them as a carpet vac, in the shed, garage or workshop they are fantastic, suck up anything that will fit up the pipe. Lord Geordie
Over the years I have tried many, Vax, Kirby, Electrolux, Goblin, Oreck etc, even more recently a G Tech air ram, finally got a Dyson and stuck with them since my first! Ran over the floor with the vax, then put the dyson over and felt disgustingly filthy when I saw the **** it lifted from the carpets never looked back. Great vacuum cleaner.
