stoggieman
Hobby as been in decline for some years. Not many young people want to take the exam when they can use their phones and computers to chat to each other. Still a good hobby though. 7.3s Peter M1DXF
Ricko
I remember borrowing an illegal AM transeiver years ago and talking to a fella in Holland via a mag mount aerial on my Ford Cargo. Heady stuff in the late 80s!!

Vince Green
My mate was a very keen radio ham, its a very solitary hobby though. His missus got the hump with him shutting himself away for hours every night and eventually they split up.
Fatcatsplat
With chatrooms, forums, Skype and all other forms of communication available to us these days it just all seems a little "shed at the back of the garden" archaic. sportsbob
Hi Bunnykiller as you may know its not all about CW and SSB contacts there are many forms of digital internet based platform used for communication when you hold a licence. In addition to that there is quite a spread of space communication systems both digital and analogue which have specific unique technical challenges which most people could not hope to have a basic understanding of. Then there is the design and building of your own equipment that actually works, there is lots to learn. The RSGB website will give you list of local clubs so you could contact one or two of them and go along to a meeting to see what they are all about as different clubs have different core interests. I have held a full class A licence for over 30 years so I do have a clue about the subject unlike all but one of the previous reply's. 73`s
1066
Speaking of which - I know where a good working AR88 receiver can be found if anyone's looking.
victorismyhero
cor, an AR88...nice bit of kit them, although a trifle heavy..... held a licence since 1978...call sign G8PEO...no point looking it up to stalk me...not in call book and all entries on the web are out of date.. 😁 currently running a modified Icom IC707 and a yeasu 8800E the icom is into a carolina windom at a paltry 30ft via a MFJ Intellituner, and the yaesu is into a 6/2/70 "white stick" at about 20 ft my van has 2/70 home brew antenna on roof and the ft8800 comes for a ride with me when I go down our wood, though soon there will be a HF antenna up there too...
