The UK is following the Yanks down the path of politics as tribal warfare. You pick a team and barrack for them, regardless.

Imagine if Diane Abbot had driven 270 miles in the middle of the lockdown (knowingly carrying the virus) and then concocted a whole fabricated story about 'emerging into lockdown London' and sold it to the newspaper? This off topic section would glowing red with outrage!

It's actually funny....except that this kind of politics doesn't really answer in a healthy democracy.

I strongly dislike socialists but defended Kinnock Jnr when he was slated for making a trip to see his parents.

He has too much power for many people and others seem afraid of what he will whisper in Johnson's ear.

A witch hunt - full stop.

He’s an unelected bureaucrat with odious views who unduly influences gov’t policy directly by having the PM’s ear. It’s quite amusing seeing Brexiteers who previously wailed about the EU being full of unelected bureaucrats now supporting exactly what they previously claimed to oppose.

thank god for cummings the media were just starting to rev up on Brexit as virus on the back foot after months of doom and gloom  we had many many months on Brexit  in the past and  bored stupid     cummings took one for the team      now the gutter press are focused on him  while the government gets on with more important issues      gutter press  bbc  etc     how I wish reporters could inform us of good and bad elsewhere in the world rather than tell us government is wrong          in difficult times unprecedent times   the press is found to be lacking day after day         I have lost faith in the truth

I reckon it all hangs on whether or not the second trip is real or some absolute div in the press making it up.

The more the government defend this the more infuriated I have become. It will be interesting to see the reaction when asked for comparison with the family of Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab, a 13 year old child who died alone in hospital as his family were not allowed to be with him due to Coronavirus restrictions. Or the countless nurses and doctors isolating away from their young children just to do their job. My mum and her siblings couldn’t go to my 42 year old cousin’s funeral after she died of Coronavirus.

The government have badly, baldy misjudged public mood on this one. It’s going to go much further than Cummings now. I would not be surprised if there are issues both sides of the aisle.

I'm not too sure of the legalities of what he did  ,  but the press are certainly getting their knives into him.

Yes the left wing press haven’t forgiven him for delivering Brexit.

To me - that is they real key issue (and I'm not too sure either!).

It has been established (certainly as far as I'm concerned) that the trip to a separate isolated accommodation at his parent's property ......... with essentials 'dropped on the doorstep' by family members was not strictly illegal.  I don't think it was necessarily 'wise' but I can understand why it was done (for their child) and it apparently wasn't illegal.  None of the facts that he did it are disputed.  I have not heard that they left the car at any stage between leaving home and arriving at his parents.

He apparently returned to London by 14th April and was seen (filmed?) in London.

It is then alleged that he returned to the Durham area and was seen there on 19th April - and also alleged that he was seen walking 30 miles from Durham.  IF these are true (and I believe he denies them) - then it is difficult to see how that could be legal?

  • Could it be that he regarded returning to London as 'going to work where he could no longer do the work remotely?  Possibly.
  • The walk in the woods - 30 miles away?  Don't see how that can be sensible at all ......... but is it illegal?  Don't know.

Whatever the legal position is - these allegations haven't left a good impression.  No one seems to know if they are true.

If it is shown that he broke the law he should go.  No question.

If he didn't break the law, that is up to him and Johnson as to whether he is sufficiently compromised by silly and thoughtless behaviour that he has to go.  That is a question for them to resolve.

Ha ha! A slip of the typing finger, but quite apt!

Hahahaha what a typo. The amazing thing is that I re-read that section before posting as something ‘looked’ wrong but being dyslexic I just couldn’t see what was so nakedly apparent.

he googled his car reg number to be certain it was him. Can you do that? Sounds dodgy to me.

I wondered if you could Google him and find an image which included his car - and showed all (or even part) of the registration.  Having had a (very quick) look, there are images of him with a car, but no visible registration plate and a few images of him in what appears to be a silver car.

It is possible that the person who saw him gave the number to the press - who will know the number as they have photographed him getting in/out of the car at his house in London and presumably have paparazzi stationed there.

No you can not. That is utter BS .

If he goes it will be a ‘Mandelson’ and he’ll be back.

With everything else going on in the world I couldn’t care any less.

He is not going anywhere.

There's a bit more to it than the issue of whether he has broken any laws, which is  obviously for the police and CPS to deal with.

There is also the issue of his conduct, integrity and honesty - qualities which he is contractually bound to display by virtue of his employment as a special advisor and temporary civil servant. Specifically, amongst other things, he is required to "retain the confidence of all those with whom he has dealings".

Right now it's getting very hard to square that requirement with reality.
